“Somebody’s Watching Me” is performed by Rockwell.

But the famous chorus is sung by Michael Jackson.

And that is why the recording sounds so familiar.

Rockwell released the song during the transition from 1983 into 1984.

It became an enormous international hit.

But many listeners assumed it was a Michael Jackson recording.

The resemblance wasn’t accidental.

Jackson had contributed the most recognisable vocal section.

His brother Jermaine Jackson also provided backing vocals.

The result became one of the defining paranoid-pop recordings of the 1980s.

And every Halloween, the song finds another audience.

Rockwell is the stage name of Kennedy Gordy.

He is the son of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records.

That is a particularly interesting connection.

Motown helped establish the careers of numerous major soul and pop artists.

The Jackson 5 became one of its most famous acts.

Rockwell therefore grew up close to the musical world that eventually made Michael Jackson an international superstar.

But he wanted to establish his own identity.

That is one reason he performed under the name Rockwell.

Because he contributed vocals to Rockwell’s recording.

The two were connected through the Motown musical world.

Jackson’s voice was already internationally recognisable.

His contribution transformed the song’s commercial appeal.

The chorus sounds immediately familiar to anybody who knows his solo recordings.

That creates an unusual situation.

Rockwell is the lead artist.

He wrote the song.

But the most famous vocal belongs to somebody else.

He contributed without conventional featured-artist billing on the original single.

That explains why many casual listeners were confused.

The recording was released under Rockwell’s name.

Jackson’s voice appeared prominently.

But his name wasn’t presented as an ordinary featured artist in the title.

Later documentation and music credits have confirmed his role.

Jermaine Jackson also contributed additional backing vocals.

Paranoia.

The narrator becomes convinced that people are observing him.

He wants privacy.

But ordinary situations begin feeling threatening.

His home no longer feels completely safe.

Even familiar surroundings become unsettling.

The song doesn’t definitively establish whether somebody is genuinely watching him.

That uncertainty is central.

The narrator may be experiencing a real threat.

Or his imagination may be transforming ordinary experiences into something frightening.

Because the music sounds cheerful while the narrator is frightened.

The electronic rhythm is energetic.

The chorus is enormous.

Michael Jackson’s vocal sounds polished and confident.

But Rockwell’s verses communicate growing anxiety.

That creates a fascinating contradiction.

The listener can dance.

The narrator cannot relax.

It’s one of the best examples of 1980s pop combining an uncomfortable emotional subject with commercial dance production.

It contains a reference to the film.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho became one of cinema’s most recognisable psychological thrillers.

The movie explores fear, surveillance and vulnerability.

Rockwell’s song uses similar imagery.

The narrator becomes worried about being observed while performing ordinary activities.

That connection helped make the recording especially suitable for horror-themed playlists.

The video develops the song’s paranoid atmosphere.

Rockwell moves through a series of unsettling environments.

Ordinary spaces become threatening.

Strange figures appear.

The production incorporates imagery associated with horror films.

That gives the recording a visual identity beyond its catchy chorus.

The song’s emotional subject becomes literal.

The narrator believes something frightening is happening around him.

The single first appeared at the end of 1983 and became a major hit in 1984.

It appeared on Rockwell’s debut album of the same name.

The recording reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It also reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart.

That made it an enormous commercial success.

For Rockwell, it became his defining recording.

His later recordings didn’t achieve the same mainstream success.

“Somebody’s Watching Me” became so culturally recognisable that it overshadowed the rest of his catalogue.

His follow-up “Obscene Phone Caller” reached the American Top 40.

But it didn’t approach the impact of his debut.

That led to Rockwell frequently being described as a one-hit wonder.

The description reflects mainstream recognition rather than the total number of recordings he made.

Because its central subject is immediately suitable.

Feeling watched.

Fear inside the home.

Unseen threats.

Horror-film imagery.

Those are familiar Halloween themes.

The music is also danceable.

That makes it perfect for parties.

Some Halloween songs are too frightening for ordinary celebrations.

Others are playful but musically uninteresting.

Rockwell’s recording combines a strong pop hook with unsettling subject matter.

That gives it lasting seasonal appeal.

Extremely.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller album had been released in 1982.

By 1983 and 1984, he was becoming one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

His appearance on Rockwell’s recording therefore attracted considerable attention.

It also created a direct connection between the song and the wider musical world surrounding Thriller.

Both recordings became Halloween favourites for different reasons.

Synth-pop.

Synth-funk.

Dance-pop.

Contemporary R&B influences.

The recording combines electronic production with a strong rhythmic foundation.

Its sound is distinctly associated with the 1980s.

The synthesizers create atmosphere.

The vocal chorus provides mainstream appeal.

And Rockwell’s unusual delivery gives the song its personality.

Because they perform different roles.

Rockwell’s verses are comparatively spoken and theatrical.

He sounds anxious.

Almost as though he is explaining a disturbing situation directly to the listener.

Jackson’s chorus is more melodic.

It provides the enormous memorable hook.

That contrast gives the recording its structure.

Rockwell creates the story.

Jackson makes the fear singable.

Try:

Michael Jackson – Thriller

Rockwell – Obscene Phone Caller

Talking Heads – Psycho Killer

Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

Depeche Mode – People Are People

The Police – Every Breath You Take

Oingo Boingo – Dead Man’s Party

The Human League – Don’t You Want Me

These recordings explore different combinations of unsettling themes, electronic production and memorable 1980s pop songwriting.

Because the chorus is the part they remember.

Most people recognise songs through their strongest musical hook.

In “Somebody’s Watching Me”, that hook is performed by one of the most recognisable singers in popular music.

Rockwell remains the principal artist.

But Jackson’s contribution makes the recording immediately familiar.

That is an unusual form of collaboration.

One artist creates the song.

Another provides the vocal moment that defines its public identity.

Rockwell performs the lead vocals.

Michael Jackson sings the famous chorus.

Jermaine Jackson contributes backing vocals.

The recording became a major hit in 1984 and developed into a recurring Halloween favourite.

It’s one of pop music’s most famous cases of a featured voice becoming more recognisable than the artist whose name appears on the record.

And now you know why the chorus has always sounded so much like Michael Jackson.

Because it is Michael Jackson.
