John Mayer’s “Tom and Jerry” is about wanting somebody who never seems quite ready to choose you.

The relationship exists in an uncomfortable space.

There’s attraction.

There’s possibility.

But the person Mayer is singing about seems difficult to reach.

They might express interest one moment and disappear the next.

And even though the narrator understands that the relationship may never happen, he remains drawn towards it.

Released on 23 October 2026, “Tom and Jerry” marks Mayer’s first new solo single since his 2021 album Sob Rock.

The title also has a surprisingly ordinary origin.

It began as the name of a voice memo on Mayer’s phone.

The emotional game of pursuing somebody who never quite becomes available.

The narrator is attracted to somebody who creates uncertainty.

Rather than developing into a straightforward romance, the relationship seems to involve repeated missed opportunities.

One person moves closer.

The other pulls away.

Then the situation changes again.

That gives the recording its connection with the idea of a cat-and-mouse game.

It’s a familiar romantic situation.

Sometimes the uncertainty makes somebody even more attractive.

But it can also become exhausting.

Mayer’s songwriting explores that contradiction.

There is an obvious similarity between the title and the famous cartoon characters.

Tom spends much of the animated series pursuing Jerry.

Jerry continually escapes.

That dynamic makes the title suitable for a song about romantic pursuit.

However, Mayer hasn’t confirmed that the cartoon itself was the direct lyrical inspiration.

His explanation has been more practical.

“Tom and Jerry” was simply the name he gave the original voice memo containing the musical idea.

The title remained as the song developed.

That distinction matters.

The cartoon provides a useful interpretation.

It isn’t necessarily the complete story behind the composition.

The recording developed from a short musical idea saved on his phone.

Mayer has described the original inspiration as imagining somebody who might eventually return his feelings.

But he doesn’t sound particularly confident that it will happen.

That uncertainty became central to the composition.

Rather than writing a conventional song about somebody who has already left, Mayer explores the emotional experience of waiting for something that might never begin.

It’s a slightly different kind of heartbreak.

You aren’t necessarily grieving a relationship that ended.

You’re grieving the possibility of one that may never happen.

Mayer hasn’t publicly identified one particular person as the song’s subject.

That means claims connecting it definitively with a former girlfriend or another celebrity should be treated cautiously.

The writing can be personal without functioning as a literal account of one relationship.

Mayer has spent much of his career exploring complicated romantic emotions.

Some songs draw from identifiable experiences.

Others turn familiar emotional situations into fictional or partly fictional narratives.

Listeners don’t need to know the subject’s identity to understand the feeling.

Because the emotional tension is internal.

There isn’t an enormous argument.

No dramatic confrontation.

The narrator is mostly negotiating with his own hopes.

He knows what he wants.

He also suspects that wanting it won’t necessarily make it happen.

That gives the song a restrained emotional quality.

Mayer has often been particularly effective at writing about moments when somebody understands a situation intellectually but struggles to accept it emotionally.

“Tom and Jerry” returns to that territory.

It’s his first new solo single since the Sob Rock era.

That album arrived in 2021.

During the intervening years, Mayer remained musically active through performances with Dead & Company and other projects.

But he hadn’t released a new solo studio single in the same way.

That makes the October 2026 release significant.

It’s the beginning of another chapter rather than simply an additional track from his previous album.

Mayer’s new record label.

He launched the imprint in partnership with Mercury Records.

“Tom and Jerry” is associated with that new arrangement.

The name creates continuity with his 2021 album.

But it doesn’t necessarily mean the new music will simply repeat the sound of Sob Rock.

Mayer’s career has moved between several different musical traditions.

Pop.

Blues.

Soft rock.

Folk.

And guitar-driven singer-songwriter music.

A new release provides an opportunity to explore another combination.

John Mayer and Blake Slatkin.

The recording was made at Chaplin Studios and mixed by Serban Ghenea.

Slatkin is associated with contemporary pop production, while Mayer brings his established songwriting and guitar background.

That collaboration places the recording between classic singer-songwriter traditions and modern pop.

The arrangement supports the emotional writing rather than relying on a single enormous production effect.

Singer-songwriter pop.

Soft rock.

Contemporary adult pop.

There are also influences from Mayer’s longstanding interest in blues and guitar-based music.

The recording is particularly suitable for listeners who enjoy melodic songwriting and emotional restraint.

Rather than demanding attention through aggressive production, it allows the story and performance to develop naturally.

Both songs involve romantic uncertainty.

But their perspectives are different.

“Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” describes a relationship already collapsing.

The narrator recognises that something important is ending.

“Tom and Jerry” explores a relationship that may never properly begin.

That makes its emotional tension more hypothetical.

The question isn’t simply whether love can survive.

It’s whether the other person will ever choose to participate.

Not an obvious one.

The narrator remains attracted to somebody whose intentions seem uncertain.

There’s hope.

But not complete confidence.

That ambiguity is part of the recording’s appeal.

A conventional pop song might resolve the story with either a reunion or a breakup.

Mayer is more interested in the uncomfortable space between those outcomes.

The feelings remain unresolved.

So does the future.

If you enjoy the reflective songwriting, try:

John Mayer – Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

John Mayer – Edge of Desire

John Mayer – Wild Blue

John Mayer – In Your Atmosphere

The 1975 – About You

Bon Iver – Holocene

Daniel Caesar – Always

Hozier – Unknown / Nth

These recordings explore different approaches to longing, emotional uncertainty and melodic songwriting.

Because he frequently writes about emotions people find difficult to explain.

Wanting somebody who isn’t available.

Knowing a relationship is unhealthy but struggling to leave.

Feeling nostalgic about something that wasn’t necessarily perfect.

Those experiences are ordinary.

Mayer makes them musically interesting through specific observations and carefully controlled performances.

His guitar playing attracts considerable attention.

But the songwriting is what allows the songs to remain relevant beyond individual performances.

Begin with Sob Rock.

Then explore Continuum and Born and Raised.

Those albums demonstrate different sides of Mayer’s musical identity.

Continuum places greater emphasis on blues and soul influences.

Born and Raised explores a more acoustic, folk-influenced direction.

Sob Rock embraces the musical atmosphere of 1980s soft rock.

“Tom and Jerry” provides another entry point into that wider catalogue.

Wanting somebody who always seems slightly out of reach.

The title began as an ordinary voice-memo name.

The song developed into an exploration of romantic uncertainty.

And its release marks Mayer’s return to solo recording after five years.

Sometimes the most painful relationship isn’t the one that ends badly.

It’s the one that never quite becomes real.
