The Weeknd has surprised fans with a brand-new song titled Hong Kong, featuring a sample of a classic track by Cantopop legend Faye Wong.

The Canadian superstar premiered the previously unreleased song on Saturday 24 October 2026 during the opening night of his four-show residency at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium.

The performance combined The Weeknd’s atmospheric R&B sound with Wong’s 1993 song Seasonal Wind, creating a nostalgic tribute to the city’s musical history.

Fans have since shared footage of the performance online, with particular attention being paid to the unexpected sample and the accompanying visuals celebrating Hong Kong.

Here’s everything we know about the song and the music behind it.

What song does The Weeknd sample in Hong Kong?

The Weeknd’s new song samples Seasonal Wind, a 1993 Cantopop recording by Faye Wong.

The original song is known in Cantonese as 季候風, which can be translated as Seasonal Wind or Monsoon.

The recording is an important part of Wong’s early catalogue and is familiar to generations of listeners in Hong Kong.

For his new song, The Weeknd incorporates elements of the original recording, including Wong’s Cantonese vocals, into an atmospheric contemporary production.

The contrast between the older ballad and his modern sound is one of the most striking aspects of the performance.

Rather than using an immediately recognisable contemporary pop sample, he has drawn from a song deeply associated with Hong Kong’s musical past.

Who is Faye Wong?

Faye Wong is one of the most influential singers in Chinese-language popular music.

Born in Beijing, she developed a hugely successful career in Hong Kong during the late 1980s and 1990s, becoming particularly well known for her distinctive voice and willingness to experiment with different musical styles.

Her work blends Cantopop with elements of alternative pop, dream pop and other international influences.

Alongside her music career, Wong appeared in several films, including Wong Kar-wai’s acclaimed 1994 romantic drama Chungking Express.

Her involvement in that film helped introduce her to international cinema audiences who may not have been familiar with her music.

For listeners discovering Faye Wong through The Weeknd, Seasonal Wind provides an excellent starting point for exploring her earlier catalogue.

Why did The Weeknd create a song about Hong Kong?

The song appears to be a tribute to Hong Kong and its cultural identity.

During the performance, the stadium screens displayed footage inspired by the city’s streets, architecture and everyday life.

The visuals included Victoria Harbour, traditional red-sailed boats, neon signs, red taxis and familiar streetscapes associated with Hong Kong.

The imagery draws heavily on the atmosphere of the late 1980s and 1990s, the same period during which Faye Wong became a major star.

The accompanying video was directed by Evan Larsen, who has described nostalgia for that era as a key part of the production’s appeal.

The result connects Hong Kong’s musical heritage with its visual identity, turning the performance into something more personal than a conventional tour-exclusive song.

Has The Weeknd released Hong Kong on Spotify or Apple Music?

As of 26 October 2026, Hong Kong has not been announced as a standalone streaming release.

The song was premiered live during The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour, and footage has since appeared on social media.

However, no official streaming release date has been confirmed.

Fans hoping to hear a studio version will need to watch for further announcements from the singer.

There is also no confirmation that the song will appear on a future album.

Has The Weeknd debuted other songs named after cities?

Hong Kong isn’t the only city-inspired song The Weeknd has introduced during his 2026 tour.

Earlier in the year, he debuted a song called Rio during a performance in Rio de Janeiro, featuring Brazilian singer Anitta.

He also reportedly introduced a track called Tokyo during his Japanese tour dates.

These performances have attracted attention because they connect new music directly to the cities where the concerts take place.

Whether the tracks will eventually become part of a larger project remains unknown.

When are The Weeknd’s Hong Kong concerts?

The Weeknd’s four-night run at Kai Tak Stadium includes performances on:

  • 24 October 2026

  • 25 October 2026

  • 30 October 2026

  • 31 October 2026

The shows form part of his continuing After Hours Til Dawn Tour.

For fans attending the remaining performances, it will be interesting to see whether Hong Kong becomes a regular part of the setlist.

A new audience for Faye Wong’s music

One of the most interesting outcomes of the performance is the attention it has brought to Faye Wong’s original recording.

Music sampling can introduce older songs to audiences who weren’t familiar with the original artists, and this collaboration has already encouraged listeners to investigate Seasonal Wind.

The Weeknd’s tribute connects different generations of music fans through a song released more than three decades ago.

For anyone who enjoyed the new performance, listening to Faye Wong’s 1993 recording offers another way to appreciate how the two songs connect.

And while an official release date for Hong Kong remains unconfirmed, the live premiere has already become one of the most talked-about moments from The Weeknd’s latest tour.
