Apple HomeView comes with a built-in Music app, a touchscreen and speakers designed for everyday listening. But after spending £299 on the hardware, do you also need to pay for Apple Music every month?

Not necessarily for every kind of audio. HomeView supports AirPlay and compatible third-party audio apps from an iPhone, giving it potential uses beyond Apple’s subscription service. However, that doesn’t mean every free music app has been confirmed to work directly on HomeView, or that you can freely stream the entire Apple Music catalogue without subscribing.

The key is understanding what ‘free music’ means and how the music reaches the device.

No. A subscription to Apple Music isn’t a requirement for using HomeView as a smart display. Apple also promotes features such as home controls, FaceTime, timers, information, photos and other entertainment.

However, if you want on-demand access to the Apple Music streaming catalogue, a suitable Apple Music subscription is generally required. Buying HomeView doesn’t include unlimited access to every album in the service.

Some audio sources may work without that subscription, depending on the app, content, region and playback method. You should distinguish between HomeView’s hardware capabilities and the licensing rules of the streaming service supplying the songs.

Spotify offers a free, advertising-supported tier in supported regions. HomeView officially supports AirPlay, and Spotify can use AirPlay on compatible Apple equipment.

That makes routing Spotify Free audio from an iPhone a plausible possibility, but HomeView-specific playback hasn’t yet been independently verified. Apple also hasn’t confirmed a native Spotify app or full Spotify Connect support for HomeView.

Even if playback works, the normal Spotify Free limitations would still apply. HomeView would not remove advertisements, unlock Premium-only features or override restrictions attached to your Spotify account.

If this is your main plan, test your exact Spotify account and iPhone setup when HomeView is released. Don’t buy on the assumption that every Spotify feature shown in the iPhone app will appear on HomeView’s screen.

Podcasts can be a particularly appealing alternative to a paid music subscription. Apple lists Podcasts as a built-in HomeView app, and podcasts are often free to listen to, although some creators offer paid subscriptions or exclusive episodes.

Radio is a little more complicated. Different radio stations and services offer free streams, but the way they work with HomeView will depend on Apple or the relevant app supporting them. Apple’s broad announcement doesn’t identify every available station or integration.

If you already listen to free internet radio on an iPhone, AirPlay may be an option when HomeView arrives. The details should be tested with the exact app you use.

If you’ve bought music downloads or have a personal audio library on an iPhone, iPad or computer, it’s worth considering whether your existing playback app can send that audio through AirPlay.

AirPlay supports audio from compatible Apple devices to supported receivers, and HomeView is part of Apple’s AirPlay ecosystem. That provides a potential way to listen to music you already own rather than paying for a new streaming subscription.

However, don’t assume HomeView acts as a file-storage device or can automatically browse every personal music library by itself. A phone, computer or supported app may still be needed to choose tracks and send them to the device.

If your music collection is stored in a particular app or format, test that source after launch.

YouTube Music has a free option in supported markets, but its features differ from Premium and may include advertisements, restrictions on background playback and other limitations.

HomeView supports AirPlay, which provides a potential route from a compatible iPhone. Apple has not confirmed a native YouTube Music interface, however, and using AirPlay doesn’t automatically make a free account behave like Premium.

This matters especially when switching away from the YouTube Music app or turning off your phone screen. The experience can depend on the service’s own rules, so don’t assume a method that works for one paid streaming app will work identically on every free tier.

Siri AI can provide broad knowledge and help with music discovery, according to Apple. It may be able to answer questions about genres, artists or songs without requiring you to pay specifically for Apple Music.

But discovering a song and streaming that song on demand are different things. Siri can know the answer to a musical question without giving you access to a recording you aren’t licensed to stream through your chosen service.

Apple has also indicated that some advanced AI features will have usage limits, with expanded access potentially offered for a fee in future.

Beyond the £299 purchase price, the potential costs depend on what you want HomeView to do. Apple Music, iCloud+ and particular third-party services may involve subscriptions. Some personalised Siri functions require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, and the wall-mounted HomeView requires separately purchased mounting and power accessories.

None of those expenses automatically applies to every household. You might use HomeView mainly for home controls, free podcasts and music sent from devices you already own.

The important step is to list the features you actually want before buying, then check which services and equipment those features require.

Possibly, but the argument is weaker if music is your only reason for purchasing it. Apple Music has the clearest built-in listening experience, including artwork and lyrics, while third-party and free-service support is less fully documented before launch.

If you already own a good speaker and enjoy free music on your phone, you may not need another £299 device to hear it. On the other hand, if you also want Home controls, FaceTime and a permanent display, HomeView may still make sense.

The good news is that Apple Music isn’t compulsory for owning HomeView. The unanswered question is how smoothly your particular free music services will work when the device launches on 13 November 2026.
