The beautiful instrumental music from La La Land’s planetarium scene is called “Planetarium”.

It was composed by Justin Hurwitz for the 2016 musical.

The recording accompanies the extraordinary sequence where Sebastian and Mia appear to float through space.

And it’s enjoying another period of attention in October 2026.

TikTok creators are using the recording for:

romantic videos

travel montages

cinematic edits

outfit reveals

and dreamy visual sequences.

The music works because it creates an immediate feeling of wonder.

But its original purpose was much more specific.

It was written for one of the film’s most important romantic moments.

Sebastian and Mia visit Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

The characters are played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

As the sequence develops, the film moves away from ordinary reality.

The couple enter the observatory’s planetarium.

Then something extraordinary happens.

Gravity appears to disappear.

The characters float upwards.

They move through a dreamlike representation of the stars.

Eventually they dance through space.

The scene isn’t intended as a realistic depiction of something that happened.

It’s a musical expression of how the characters feel.

Falling in love has temporarily changed the laws of their universe.

Justin Hurwitz.

Hurwitz worked closely with director Damien Chazelle on La La Land.

The pair had previously collaborated on Whiplash.

Hurwitz’s score combines classical Hollywood musical influences with jazz and contemporary film music.

He was particularly interested in creating themes that could return throughout the film.

Rather than giving every scene completely unrelated music, he developed melodic ideas that connect the characters’ experiences.

“Planetarium” belongs to that larger musical structure.

No.

They’re separate compositions.

“City of Stars” is the film’s famous vocal song.

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone perform different versions during the story.

“Planetarium” is an instrumental score cue.

It belongs to the observatory sequence.

That distinction is useful because people often remember the visuals without knowing which recording accompanies them.

If you’re looking for the music during the floating dance, search for “Planetarium”.

If you’re looking for the song sung by Sebastian and Mia, you’re probably looking for “City of Stars”.

Because the music has become useful beyond its original scene.

An October 2026 SocialBee trend update identified the recording as a popular soundtrack for dreamy and romantic videos.

Creators are using it to make ordinary moments feel cinematic.

A holiday.

A city at night.

A beautiful outfit.

A couple walking together.

The recording creates the impression that something emotionally important is happening.

That makes it particularly versatile.

A song with specific lyrics might limit the meaning of a video.

An instrumental allows the creator to supply the story.

The orchestration is central.

“Planetarium” moves through delicate melodic ideas before becoming more expansive.

The music is carefully connected with the characters’ physical movement.

As Sebastian and Mia leave the ground, the arrangement creates the sensation of becoming weightless.

That emotional quality is difficult to communicate through conventional dialogue.

The film doesn’t need either character to announce that they’re falling in love.

The music makes the feeling obvious.

It can be interpreted that way.

La La Land frequently moves between ordinary reality and the heightened world of musical fantasy.

Characters begin dancing in environments where conventional rules suddenly stop applying.

The planetarium sequence takes that approach to an extreme.

The couple literally float.

But the scene works as emotional storytelling rather than science fiction.

The floating imagery suggests how overwhelming their attraction has become.

The important thing is not whether the event physically happened.

It’s what the experience communicates.

Griffith Observatory.

It’s one of Los Angeles’s most recognisable landmarks.

The building has appeared in numerous films and television programmes.

Its location overlooking the city makes it particularly suitable for cinematic scenes.

La La Land uses the observatory partly because of its connection with classic Hollywood.

The film repeatedly celebrates Los Angeles as a place associated with art, ambition and romantic possibility.

Griffith Observatory provides a perfect setting for those ideas.

Film score.

Orchestral instrumental.

Cinematic classical-influenced music.

There are also elements of the traditional Hollywood musical.

The recording isn’t a conventional pop song.

It doesn’t depend on a singer or chorus.

Instead, the arrangement develops around the emotional movement of the scene.

That makes it particularly suitable for visual storytelling.

Because music is part of the film’s narrative language.

Some musical scenes involve characters singing.

Others communicate through dance and instrumental arrangements.

Hurwitz’s score allows the story to continue even when nobody speaks.

The music can communicate:

attraction

uncertainty

excitement

regret

and nostalgia.

That’s especially important in a film where the characters’ romantic relationship is closely connected with their artistic ambitions.

The soundtrack includes:

Another Day of Sun

Someone in the Crowd

Mia & Sebastian’s Theme

A Lovely Night

City of Stars

Audition (The Fools Who Dream)

Epilogue.

Several of these recordings use related melodic ideas.

Listening to the full soundtrack reveals how Hurwitz develops the emotional story through music.

“Planetarium” is particularly effective because it takes the characters into an almost entirely imaginary world.

If you enjoy its romantic, cinematic atmosphere, try:

Justin Hurwitz – Mia & Sebastian’s Theme

Justin Hurwitz – Epilogue

Nicholas Britell – Agape

Ludovico Einaudi – Experience

Joe Hisaishi – One Summer’s Day

Max Richter – On the Nature of Daylight

Hans Zimmer – Cornfield Chase

Michael Nyman – The Heart Asks Pleasure First.

These pieces create different emotional atmospheres.

Some are romantic.

Others are nostalgic or melancholic.

All demonstrate how instrumental music can communicate powerful feelings without conventional lyrics.

Because the music and imagery are inseparable.

Many people remember the floating dance before they remember the name of the track.

That’s normal.

The score was created to support the visual experience.

But once you identify the recording, you can appreciate it independently.

The same melody that accompanies two people dancing among the stars can make an ordinary holiday video feel extraordinary.

It’s “Planetarium” by Justin Hurwitz, from the La La Land soundtrack.

The music originally accompanied Sebastian and Mia’s romantic visit to Griffith Observatory.

In 2026, listeners are giving it another life through cinematic social-media videos.

Its appeal is simple.

It makes ordinary experiences feel magical.
