Does Instagram Keep Suggesting Creed’s “Higher”?

If Instagram keeps recommending Creed’s “Higher” whenever you try to add music to a post, you are not imagining it.

Meta has acknowledged that the 1999 Creed song has been recommended to more users than intended.

The company said its engineering team was looking into the issue after people began noticing “Higher” appearing again and again, often regardless of what they were posting.

That turned a music-recommendation bug into one of October 2026’s strangest catalogue revivals.

And because the internet is the internet, a technical problem quickly became a joke.

Why this photo of lunch?

Creed.

Why this holiday video?

Creed.

Why this dog?

Can you take me higher?

Is Creed paying Instagram to promote “Higher”?

There is no evidence of that.

Meta has specifically acknowledged that the track was being recommended more heavily than intended.

The behaviour appears to be an error in Instagram’s music suggestion system rather than a secret promotional campaign.

That distinction matters because some users understandably assumed the repetition must be paid marketing.

Apparently not.

Creed accidentally won the algorithm lottery.

Why is “Higher” funny as an Instagram suggestion?

Because it is absurdly dramatic.

“HIGHER” is not subtle background music.

It arrives with:

huge guitars

Scott Stapp’s unmistakable voice

an enormous chorus

and the emotional intensity of somebody singing from the top of a mountain during a thunderstorm.

Put that over a photo of a sandwich and the contrast becomes funny.

The glitch therefore created its own meme format.

The less appropriate the image, the better “Higher” seemed to work.

What is Creed’s “Higher” actually about?

Escaping into a better world.

Scott Stapp has described the song as developing from dreams in which he could consciously control what was happening.

This is often called lucid dreaming.

He became interested in whether he could use dreams to reach a place where ordinary limitations disappeared.

That idea developed into “Higher”.

The “higher place” is therefore not simply:

getting famous

getting intoxicated

or literally climbing a mountain.

It is an idealised place beyond the frustrations of normal life.

Was “Higher” inspired by a recurring dream?

Yes.

Stapp has repeatedly connected the song with recurring dreams and his attempts to become more conscious while dreaming.

That makes the song considerably stranger than its reputation as a giant late-1990s rock anthem might suggest.

On the surface:

arena rock.

Underneath:

a man experimenting with dream consciousness.

Fairly efficient use of distortion pedals.

When did Creed release “Higher”?

It appeared on Human Clay, the album that transformed Creed into one of the biggest rock bands in America.

The album also contains:

With Arms Wide Open

What If

Are You Ready?

Higher became one of Creed’s defining songs and helped establish the band’s enormous commercial success around the turn of the millennium.

What genre is Creed?

Post-grunge.

Alternative rock.

Hard rock.

Creed emerged after the first major wave of grunge bands and borrowed some of the genre’s heavier guitar language while moving toward more polished, radio-friendly songwriting.

That style later acquired a less flattering internet nickname:

“butt rock”.

The term generally refers to a particular strain of commercially successful late-1990s and 2000s hard rock associated with bands such as:

Creed

Nickelback

3 Doors Down

Theory of a Deadman

and similar acts.

The label began as an insult.

A younger generation is now using it with considerably more affection.

Why is Creed popular again?

Nostalgia.

Memes.

Younger listeners discovering 2000s rock without the old cultural baggage.

Creed spent years being treated as an easy punchline.

Then enough time passed.

Now a generation that did not live through the band’s original overexposure can simply hear:

huge chorus

big guitar

ridiculous sincerity.

And enjoy it.

Vulture noted that the Instagram glitch arrives during a wider revival of early-2000s hard rock, with Creed, Nickelback and Papa Roach all receiving renewed cultural attention.

Why does 2000s rock work so well in memes?

Because it is sincere.

Modern internet humour often works through extreme contrast.

A completely ordinary video becomes much funnier if the soundtrack behaves as though the fate of civilisation depends on it.

Creed are perfect for that.

Small problem.

Massive guitar.

Dog walking across kitchen.

Scott Stapp appears emotionally transformed.

Is “Higher” a religious song?

Creed’s lyrics often use spiritual language.

Stapp grew up in a deeply religious environment, and themes involving:

faith

salvation

God

struggle

and transcendence

appear throughout the band’s catalogue.

But Creed did not identify themselves as a Christian rock band.

“Higher” can certainly be heard spiritually.

The song’s stated origin in lucid dreaming also gives the “higher place” a broader psychological interpretation.

What is the “Higher” music video about?

Mostly:

Creed playing to a huge crowd.

The video reinforces the sense that the track belongs in an arena.

It contains the late-1990s rock-video vocabulary you would expect:

dramatic lighting

crowd shots

slow motion

Scott Stapp performing with complete commitment.

There is very little irony.

That is increasingly part of the appeal.

Songs like Creed’s “Higher”

Try:

3 Doors Down – Kryptonite

Nickelback – How You Remind Me

Fuel – Hemorrhage (In My Hands)

Staind – It’s Been Awhile

Puddle of Mudd – Blurry

Lifehouse – Hanging by a Moment

Bush – Glycerine

Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song

Matchbox Twenty – Bent

If your interest is specifically the early-2000s rock revival, Radar’s forgotten-2000s-song content is a natural next read.

Why does Instagram keep suggesting “Higher”?

Because Instagram’s recommendation system went slightly Creed-shaped.

Meta has confirmed the song was being suggested more often than intended.

The bug will presumably be fixed.

The meme may last considerably longer.

And perhaps this is the ending “Higher” always deserved.

Not a solemn reassessment by music critics.

A technical glitch forcing millions of people to soundtrack completely inappropriate photos with Creed.

Can the algorithm take us higher?

Apparently yes.

If Instagram keeps recommending Creed’s “Higher” whenever you try to add music to a
