Was “Video Killed the Radio Star” the First MTV Video?

Because if you are launching a television channel dedicated to music videos, the joke is almost too perfect to resist.

MTV launched in the United States on August 1, 1981.

At 12:01am, the first music video it broadcast was:

The Buggles – “Video Killed the Radio Star”.

The song had originally been released in 1979.

So MTV didn’t commission an anthem explaining its arrival.

It found one that had already predicted the argument.

Then played it first.

What is “Video Killed the Radio Star” actually about?

Technological change.

And nostalgia for the thing technology replaces.

Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley wrote a song imagining an older performer remembering a time when radio carried voices directly into people’s lives.

Then:

television.

Images.

Music video.

Technology changes the relationship.

The radio star’s world disappears.

Horn has connected the song with childhood memories of listening to radio late at night and the larger sense that new machines continually alter culture.

Did the Buggles predict MTV?

Not specifically.

The song existed before MTV launched.

That is what makes the choice so good.

The broader transformation it describes was already happening.

Visual presentation increasingly mattered to pop music.

Promotional films existed long before MTV.

Television performances mattered.

Artists such as David Bowie and Queen understood video.

MTV simply created an entire channel around that shift.

Who were the Buggles?

Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes became the public core of the Buggles.

Bruce Woolley also played an important role in the song’s creation.

All three helped write “Video Killed the Radio Star”.

Horn later became one of the most important record producers in British pop.

His production credits and projects would include work connected with:

ABC

Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Yes

Pet Shop Boys

Seal.

Geoff Downes also joined Yes and became part of Asia.

The apparently lightweight “one-hit wonder” story hides some extremely serious musicians.

Was there another version before the Buggles hit?

Bruce Woolley recorded his own version with the Camera Club.

The composition therefore existed in more than one form around its original release period.

The Buggles recording became the famous one because its production sounds almost like the future arriving.

Processed vocals.

Synthesizers.

Huge detail.

Pop music about technology made with conspicuously modern technology.

Good fit.

Why was MTV such a big change?

Before music television became dominant, listeners could become huge fans without having a constant visual relationship with performers.

MTV altered that.

Suddenly:

clothes

hair

choreography

cinema

editing

visual identity

could matter almost as much as the record.

Artists particularly suited to video gained an advantage.

Pop stars began needing visual worlds.

The 1980s became almost impossible to separate from the music video.

Was “Video Killed the Radio Star” literally right?

Not exactly.

Radio survived.

Still exists.

Video didn’t kill it.

Streaming didn’t kill radio either.

Technology usually changes media rather than cleanly eliminating everything older.

But the song’s emotional argument remains accurate.

Every new format produces:

excitement

panic

nostalgia.

Radio.

Television.

MTV.

YouTube.

TikTok.

AI.

Same conversation.

Different machine.

What happened to MTV itself?

Here is where the story became almost too neat.

By the 2020s, traditional music-video television had been displaced by:

YouTube

social media

on-demand streaming.

In the UK and several other markets, MTV’s remaining dedicated music-video channels closed at the end of 2025.

MTV Music signed off with:

“Video Killed the Radio Star”.

The same song associated with the beginning of MTV became part of its television ending.

Video killed the radio star.

Then the internet killed the video channel.

Presumably somebody should write that song.

Who directed the original video?

Russell Mulcahy.

Mulcahy became a hugely significant music-video director and later directed feature films.

The Buggles clip looks primitive beside the massive budgets videos would command only a few years later.

That’s part of its charm.

MTV’s first video did not arrive after the medium had matured.

The channel helped make it mature.

Is Hans Zimmer in the video?

Yes, the future film composer appears briefly playing keyboards.

That is another bizarre footnote.

Before:

The Lion King.

Gladiator.

The Dark Knight.

Dune.

Hans Zimmer can be spotted in the video that helped open MTV.

Pop culture has strange family trees.

What genre is “Video Killed the Radio Star”?

New wave.

Synth-pop.

Electronic pop.

It arrived as British pop was moving quickly away from purely guitar-based arrangements and toward synthesizers and studio technology.

The music itself therefore reinforces the subject.

Songs like “Video Killed the Radio Star”

The Human League – Don’t You Want Me

Gary Numan – Cars

OMD – Enola Gay

Thomas Dolby – She Blinded Me with Science

New Musik – Living by Numbers

Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams

A-ha – Take On Me

Radar’s “How Was Take On Me Made?” article is a perfect internal link because it shows what music video could become only a few years after MTV’s launch.

Why was it the first MTV video?

Because someone at MTV understood symbolism.

A new channel appears.

Its entire premise is:

watch music instead of merely hearing it.

What should play first?

A song called:

“Video Killed the Radio Star.”

There are moments when subtlety is unnecessary.

Because if you are launching a
