Is the “Insomniac” TikTok Song?

The soft, dreamy song appearing under autumn scenery, bedrooms, slow Halloween decoration videos and nostalgic clips is “Insomniac” by Memo Boy and Chakra Efendi.

It is not a new 2026 single.

Apple Music dates the track to April 21, 2017.

Nine years later, it is behaving like a current discovery record.

A TikTok trends tracker updated on October 5 lists “Insomniac” at peak momentum with roughly 518,700 videos attached to the sound, particularly across cosy autumn imagery and slower visual edits.

If you have heard it repeatedly and wondered:

who made this?

Here is the rabbit hole.

Who is Memo Boy?

Memo Boy is one of the musical aliases associated with producer and musician Otto Benson.

Benson has released experimental music across several names and styles, ranging from ambient and beat-driven projects to more intimate songwriting.

Pitchfork’s review of Benson’s 2026 album Peanut notes his history recording under identities including Memo Boy, Ronnie P and OTTO.

That context is useful.

“Insomniac” sounds less like somebody trying to engineer a conventional pop hit and more like a piece of music from a small online world that happened to keep travelling.

Who is Chakra Efendi?

Chakra Efendi shares the track credit and songwriting connection.

The recording’s vocal intimacy is central to why the song works.

Nothing feels oversized.

No enormous pop drums.

No dramatic modulation announcing that you should now feel emotional.

The arrangement creates a small room.

The listener moves inside.

What is “Insomniac” about?

Longing for simple, sincere connection.

The song circles ideas of:

repair

honesty

affection

past mistakes

wanting to be close to someone without losing yourself.

The title suggests someone emotionally restless.

Not necessarily:

I drank six coffees and cannot sleep.

More:

my thoughts and desires will not settle.

That reading fits the music.

Everything feels soft.

The mind underneath does not.

Why is it perfect for autumn TikTok?

Autumn internet culture has a particular visual language.

Low light.

Rain.

Coffee.

Candles.

Bedrooms.

Trees.

Old photographs.

Slightly sad people staring through windows.

“Insomniac” fits that environment because it doesn’t dictate a dramatic narrative.

It supplies atmosphere.

The listener can place almost any personal memory on top.

That is incredibly useful for short-form video.

Why do old lo-fi songs suddenly become enormous?

Discovery has changed.

A track from 2017 does not arrive on somebody’s phone labelled:

OLD MUSIC.

It arrives between two completely current videos.

If the sound works, the release date is invisible.

Then people tap the audio.

Search the title.

Find the artist.

Add the track.

This process can continue for years without traditional radio or a conventional re-release campaign.

Radar has already documented this behaviour across older tracks by artists ranging from bôa to Miguel.

“Insomniac” is another version of the same phenomenon.

What genre is “Insomniac”?

Lo-fi indie is a useful starting point.

You may also see listeners place Memo Boy near:

bedroom pop

dreamy indie

ambient pop

slowcore-adjacent music.

Genre becomes difficult because the track is more defined by texture than by an obvious band setup.

The important ingredients are:

soft production

repetition

fragile vocals

intimate atmosphere.

Is Memo Boy dream pop?

Not strictly in the classic Cocteau Twins or Beach House sense.

But modern listeners often discover these styles together.

Algorithmic playlists do not care much about traditional scene boundaries.

A listener might move from:

Memo Boy

to Men I Trust

to Duster

to bôa

to Slowdive

to sign crushes motorist.

Historically, those artists belong to different scenes.

Emotionally, they can occupy similar playlists.

Radar’s dream-pop and slowcore explainers therefore make sensible internal links.

Why does “Insomniac” feel nostalgic?

Production can create false memory.

Tape-like softness.

Muted high frequencies.

Simple instrumentation.

Vocals that do not sound overly edited.

Those qualities can make music feel older or more private than it actually is.

The listener hears:

memory.

Even if they have never heard the song before.

That is a powerful trick.

What should you listen to after “Insomniac”?

Try more Memo Boy first.

Then:

Duster – Inside Out

Men I Trust – Show Me How

Alex G – Sarah

Current Joys – New Flesh

TV Girl – Lovers Rock

bôa – Duvet

Cigarettes After Sex – Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby

sign crushes motorist – wish

Mac DeMarco – Chamber of Reflection

The route you choose depends on what you liked.

Want the intimacy?

Alex G.

Want the dreaminess?

Men I Trust.

Want something sadder and slower?

Duster.

Why is the song called “Insomniac”?

Because the emotional state never fully settles.

The track imagines intimacy as something capable of providing comfort while acknowledging that old habits and internal complications remain.

Love isn’t presented as:

person arrives.

Everything fixed.

It is closer to:

person arrives.

Maybe I can rest.

That uncertainty is more interesting.

What is the “Insomniac” TikTok song?

A 2017 track by Memo Boy and Chakra Efendi that the internet has pulled into autumn 2026.

Current videos make it look as though it was composed specifically for:

October bedrooms

rainy windows

candles

and people having a minor emotional crisis at 1:17am.

It
