class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">punk<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">garage rock<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and spoken-word intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then every album made the label less useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Romance in 2024, the band were incorporating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">shoegaze<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">goth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">industrial production<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">trip-hop<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">electronic music<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and widescreen alternative rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, arrives October 16, 2026 and moves even further away from the guitar language of their earliest records into colder, stranger and more synthetic territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What genre are Fontaines D.C.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternative rock if you want one broad box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post-punk if you are talking about their origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something increasingly difficult to classify if you have listened beyond the first album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why were Fontaines D.C. called post-punk?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to Dogrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ingredients are obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repetitive guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bass-driven arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dry production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spoken or half-spoken vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dublin identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punk energy without conventional punk speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That placed Fontaines D.C. naturally beside the late-2010s post-punk revival that also included artists such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IDLES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Murder Capital<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dry Cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The label worked extremely well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is \u201cBoys in the Better Land\u201d post-punk?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very much so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is probably the easiest introduction to the early Fontaines sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raw guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grian Chatten sounding halfway between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">singing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">talking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and delivering a speech outside a pub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you discovered the band through \u201cStarburster\u201d or \u201cFavourite\u201d, the first album can sound almost like a different group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That evolution is the reason people increasingly search the genre question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changed on A Hero\u2019s Death?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second album slowed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The songs became darker and more repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of relying constantly on momentum, the band started using:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">drones<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">psychological tension<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">minimalism<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and more hypnotic arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post-punk still worked as a label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But already, Fontaines were stretching it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What genre is Skinty Fia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still alternative\/post-punk at the core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But considerably more gothic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skinty Fia moved into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">dark bass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish traditional references<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">electronic texture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">gothic atmosphere<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and much more spacious production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs such as \u201cJackie Down the Line\u201d still behave like guitar songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others sound much less attached to rock orthodoxy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did Romance change everything?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Fontaines D.C. stopped sounding like a band worried about belonging to one scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romance was produced by James Ford and pushed them into much larger sonic territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStarburster\u201d uses a rhythmic, almost hip-hop-adjacent structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFavourite\u201d is bright and nostalgic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title track feels dark and cinematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The album moves between textures rather than reinforcing one established identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That helped Romance reach No. 2 in the UK, become platinum-certified and earn Grammy nominations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Fontaines D.C. goth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in the sense that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fontaines D.C. = goth band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But goth and gothic rock have clearly become part of their vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can hear connections with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bauhaus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depeche Mode<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy Division<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and darker 1980s alternative music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visual side of Romance also pushed much further toward gothic and exaggerated alternative fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If somebody hears a track such as \u201cFavourite\u201d and calls it goth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not especially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they hear darker parts of Romance and understand why the connection exists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Definitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are Fontaines D.C. shoegaze?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But shoegaze texture has become increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoegaze typically uses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">layers of guitar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">effects<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">distortion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">reverb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to create atmosphere rather than traditional riff-based rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fontaines D.C. increasingly use guitars that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radar\u2019s existing shoegaze guide would be a natural internal link here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does \u201cTongue\u201d tell us about the next album?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That the movement away from straightforward live-band rock is continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the newly released \u201cTongue\u201d, bassist Conor Deegan\u2019s part was manipulated through tape-speed changes, while Grian Chatten\u2019s vocal was processed through a sampler until parts of it sounded deliberately inhuman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guitarist Conor Curley described the process as holding back the recognisable live-band elements until they were actually required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not a band trying desperately to preserve its post-punk credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Dopamine Chamber supposed to sound like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band describe the album almost as an experiment performed on the listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chatten has said the record itself is the \u201cdopamine chamber\u201d and each track is intended to create a different altered mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official album description says Fontaines D.C. are deliberately becoming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">colder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">stranger<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and more class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Murder Capital<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IDLES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Strokes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arctic Monkeys<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Smiths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radiohead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So what genre are Fontaines D.C.?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">post-punk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then add:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">alternative rock<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p usually begin inside a genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then spend the rest of their career making the label increasingly
