“Duvet” is about being unable to properly understand or communicate what you are feeling.

That surprisingly simple explanation comes directly from bôa singer Jasmine Rodgers.

Rodgers has described writing the song after returning home from a late night while dealing with difficult feelings she couldn’t properly identify or explain.

That emotional confusion eventually became attached to one of anime’s strangest and most influential series: Serial Experiments Lain.

Then, decades later, the internet rediscovered both.

In 2026, “Duvet” is still growing. The track has passed one billion streams, bôa are touring to a substantially younger audience, and the song has climbed to No. 32 on the UK Independent Singles Chart this week.

Confusion inside a relationship.

Rodgers has explained that the song came from the kind of difficult emotional state where you don’t quite know what you’re feeling and therefore don’t know how to talk about it.

That makes “Duvet” less of a conventional breakup song and more about disconnection.

You care.

You want to understand somebody.

But something between you isn’t lining up.

Anyone who has ever had a conversation where both people leave feeling less clear than when they started probably understands the mood.

No.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about the song.

bôa had already written “Duvet”.

According to Rodgers, someone at the band’s Japanese record label Polystar had a connection with people involved in Serial Experiments Lain. They liked the song and asked whether it could be used.

That’s remarkably casual considering how inseparable the two have now become.

The song wasn’t designed around Lain.

Lain found the song.

Because both are about difficulty connecting with other people.

Serial Experiments Lain explores:

identity

technology

isolation

reality

online life

and the increasingly blurred line between the person you are physically and the person you become through a network.

That probably sounds more relevant now than it did in 1998.

The anime arrived before social media became a normal part of everyday life.

Before smartphones.

Before people routinely maintained online identities.

The band themselves have since commented on how striking it is to revisit Lain and see how much human life now happens online.

“Duvet” isn’t literally about the internet.

But its emotional uncertainty fits Lain almost disturbingly well.

bôa are an English alternative band formed in London in the 1990s.

Jasmine Rodgers provides the distinctive lead vocal.

The band initially developed through a mixture of alternative rock, pop, jazz and other influences rather than belonging neatly to one scene.

“Duvet” became their defining recording because of Lain.

But the modern story is stranger.

The song continued circulating through anime fandom long after its original release.

Then TikTok, edits, memes and streaming exposed it to listeners who had never watched the anime at all.

The internet finally caught up with it.

That sounds like a joke considering the series attached to it.

But it’s basically true.

Rodgers has explained that international reach simply wasn’t available to a small band in the same way during the original release. Anime gave them pockets of listeners around the world, while modern platforms allowed those separate fan communities to suddenly become one enormous audience.

By June 2026, UCLA Radio reported that “Duvet” had passed one billion streams.

Now it is charting again in Britain.

A 1990s alternative song attached to an experimental Japanese anime is behaving like contemporary music.

Alternative rock is the simplest description.

But listeners also associate it with:

dream pop

indie rock

shoegaze-adjacent music

and atmospheric alternative pop.

It isn’t pure shoegaze.

The guitar isn’t buried deeply enough beneath distortion.

But if “Duvet” is pulling you towards dreamier guitar music, Radar’s guide to shoegaze is a natural next rabbit hole.

Try:

The Cranberries – Dreams

The Sundays – Here’s Where the Story Ends

Mazzy Star – Fade Into You

Cocteau Twins – Heaven or Las Vegas

Slowdive – Alison

The Cardigans – Communication

Lamp – For Lovers

Lush – For Love

Wisp – Your Face

Radiohead – Let Down

Don’t stop at “Duvet”.

Try:

Twilight

Fool

Elephant

Deeply

For Jasmine

Beautiful & Broken.

The band’s modern comeback also means this isn’t simply a nostalgia exercise.

There is new music to explore.

Not knowing how you feel.

And not knowing how to explain that confusion to somebody else.

That idea was personal when Jasmine Rodgers wrote it.

Serial Experiments Lain turned it into something strangely technological.

The internet turned it into something generational.

And nearly three decades later, younger listeners are apparently still trying to work out what they’re feeling too.
