specifically for businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is another problem: businesses don&#8217;t necessarily want to spend hours building playlists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A restaurant might want completely different music at breakfast, lunch and dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clothes shop might want upbeat contemporary tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hotel lobby might want something considerably calmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional background music platforms can potentially combine the legal and administrative side of music with playlists designed for particular environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That appears to be where SACEM Play is heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SACEM Play could help songwriters get paid more accurately<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another particularly interesting part of the announcement for music creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM says the listening data generated by SACEM Play should allow it to allocate royalties to songwriters and other rights holders more accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters because identifying exactly which songs are being played in thousands of individual shops isn&#8217;t always easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM currently uses several different methods to distribute royalties from music played in businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For major chains using professional music providers, playlists can be reported directly, allowing SACEM to allocate royalties based on the specific tracks being used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For smaller businesses using radio, television or their own playlists, royalties may instead be distributed using broader data and statistical methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A digital system such as SACEM Play potentially changes that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the platform knows exactly what has been played, where and when, that information can be passed into the royalty system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM&#8217;s Jean-Felix Choukroun said the service would make it possible to allocate authors&#8217; rights more accurately using the listening data available through the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For songwriters, that could be one of the most important parts of SACEM Play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Deezer is moving further into music for businesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people still associate Deezer with consumer music streaming and rivals such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But business music could become a valuable second market for streaming technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Restaurants, gyms, hotels, shops and other physical businesses collectively play an enormous amount of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also have different requirements from normal listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A consumer might want to search for a particular artist and listen to an album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A shop may instead need eight hours of uninterrupted music that fits its brand without someone constantly choosing the next song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That turns playlist creation, recommendation technology and music catalogues into business products rather than simply consumer features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deezer has increasingly been developing its technology beyond its traditional consumer streaming app, and SACEM Play gives it another route into that market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deezer has described the wider approach as <strong>Music as a Service<\/strong>, where other companies can build their own branded music experiences using Deezer&#8217;s technology and catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM Play is a particularly clear example: customers interact with a SACEM product, but Deezer provides much of the music infrastructure underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SACEM and Deezer are already working together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system changes how eligible streams are weighted and aims to reduce the impact of fraudulent streams and some non-musical content on royalty distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM has also worked with Deezer around technology designed to identify fully AI-generated music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SACEM Play therefore extends a partnership that has already moved beyond a normal relationship between a streaming platform and a collecting society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
