Freya Skye’s “Bad Taste” is about admitting something pop songs do not always like admitting:

maybe you are part of the problem.

Instead of writing another song where the ex is terrible and the singer is completely innocent, Skye takes a more playful approach.

Sometimes you make questionable decisions too.

Sometimes your taste in people is terrible.

Sometimes you are the red flag.

That self-awareness is a big part of why “Bad Taste” feels different from some of her earlier music.

At its simplest, “Bad Taste” makes fun of the decisions we make in relationships even when we probably know better.

Skye has described the song as more playful and sarcastic than her previous work.

Rather than taking herself too seriously, she is willing to acknowledge that she can make mistakes too.

That immediately gives the song personality.

There is an enormous amount of breakup pop built around one basic structure:

you were awful.

I deserved better.

Goodbye.

“Bad Taste” complicates that slightly.

What if you repeatedly choose the wrong person?

At some point you may need to investigate the person doing the choosing.

Unfortunate.

But fair.

Skye has said the track allowed her to explore a less serious side of herself.

That matters because listeners often build a very specific image of a young pop singer from their first few releases.

Emotional.

Sincere.

Polished.

Then eventually the artist needs to demonstrate some personality beyond that initial image.

“Bad Taste” does exactly that.

There is sarcasm.

Self-deprecation.

Energy.

And a sense that Skye is enjoying the joke.

Because Skye deliberately prioritised energy over perfection.

When recording the song, she reportedly struggled to reproduce the energy she felt performing it live.

The solution was to stop treating the vocal like a collection of individual perfect lines.

Instead, she sang through larger sections while physically moving around and performing.

That approach makes sense.

Some records benefit from microscopic vocal perfection.

Others need to feel alive.

“Bad Taste” belongs in the second category.

Fans had already been asking about the song after it failed to appear on Stardust.

Skye eventually released it separately.

She has described the track as something of a final goodbye to that period of her career rather than the beginning of her next album.

That makes it an interesting transitional single.

It belongs to the world listeners already associate with Freya Skye.

But it also points toward a more confident version of what comes next.

The video leans into the song’s playful energy.

Rather than creating a serious relationship drama, Skye turns the concept into something closer to a miniature movie, complete with chaos inside a desert diner and an escalating food fight.

The visual suits the record.

This isn’t:

sit in bedroom.

Look sad.

Remember boyfriend.

It is deliberately bigger and sillier.

The song entered the UK Official Trending Chart’s Top 10 in September 2026.

That chart specifically tracks songs showing strong week-on-week growth, which makes it a useful early signal of records beginning to accelerate.

Skye also has an unusually young audience growing alongside her.

That matters.

Artists who build audiences while still teenagers can change extremely quickly because the listeners themselves are changing at the same time.

Freya Skye is a British singer and performer who has built a young international fanbase through music, television and live performance.

By 2026, her Stars Align Tour had expanded beyond its initial markets, with dates reaching Latin America and Asia.

“Bad Taste” arrives at a useful moment.

She is moving from:

young performer with a growing fanbase

toward:

pop artist with an identifiable personality.

Those are not necessarily the same thing.

Pop.

More specifically, energetic contemporary pop with enough attitude to sit comfortably beside the current generation of personality-led young female pop artists.

If you enjoy pop where the singer sounds like an actual person rather than a perfectly polished character, the song makes sense.

Try:

Olivia Rodrigo – bad idea right?

Sabrina Carpenter – Taste

Maisie Peters – Lost the Breakup

Chappell Roan – Red Wine Supernova

Tate McRae – greedy

Gracie Abrams – Risk

Mimi Webb – House on Fire

Nessa Barrett – LOVE LOOKS PRETTY ON YOU

The interesting common thread is not that these songs sound identical.

They don’t.

It is attitude.

Modern pop increasingly rewards singers who allow humour, embarrassment and personality into the writing.

You can blame your ex.

But if you keep choosing terrible people, eventually somebody may need to inspect your recruitment process.

That is essentially the joke at the centre of “Bad Taste”.

Freya Skye is willing to laugh at herself.
