violence and rejection.

The song was released by Bronski Beat in 1984.

Forty years later, it remains one of the most emotionally powerful synth-pop records of the decade.

And the video makes its meaning impossible to misunderstand.

Who sings “Smalltown Boy”?

Jimmy Somerville.

That extraordinary falsetto became the defining sound of Bronski Beat.

Somerville later formed The Communards and eventually developed a solo career.

What happens in the video?

Somerville plays the young man at the centre of the story.

He notices another man at a swimming pool.

After expressing interest, he is attacked.

The police become involved.

His parents discover what happened.

His father reacts angrily.

Eventually the young man packs his belongings and leaves for London.

The final train journey is both sad and hopeful.

He has lost one home.

He is going to find another. Wikipedia

Was the story autobiographical?

It reflected experiences familiar to Somerville and many other gay people growing up in Britain at the time.

Somerville himself left Glasgow for London as a teenager.

The song therefore had a level of authenticity unusual in mainstream pop in 1984.

Why was it important?

Because openly gay pop musicians were far less visible.

Bronski Beat weren’t hiding behind coded language.

The song and video directly addressed:

homophobia

family rejection

violence

and migration towards cities where LGBTQ+ people could find communities.

That was a powerful statement on mainstream television.

Why does the music sound so sad?

The synth line.

Somerville’s voice.

And the relentless rhythm.

It creates the feeling of moving forward because you have no choice.

That’s exactly what the character does.

What genre is “Smalltown Boy”?

Synth-pop.

New wave.

Hi-NRG influences are also present across Bronski Beat’s music.

The combination of emotionally serious lyrics and electronic dance production became particularly influential.

Songs like “Smalltown Boy”

The Communards – Don’t Leave Me This Way

Pet Shop Boys – Being Boring

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle

Erasure – A Little Respect

Soft Cell – Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

OMD – Souvenir

Yazoo – Only You

Depeche Mode – Stripped

Ultravox – Vienna

Why has it lasted?

Because leaving somewhere that won’t accept you is bigger than one specific experience.

The LGBTQ+ story is central.

But listeners can also recognise:

loneliness

rejection

escaping a small town

and searching for people who understand you.

That combination makes “Smalltown Boy” both historically specific and universal.

“Smalltown Boy” is about a young gay man forced to leave home after experiencing homophobia, violence and rejection.
