More recently, Spotify playlists, TikTok trends and recommendation algorithms have become some of the biggest forces determining which songs break through.

YouTube could be introducing something slightly different.

Instead of leaving discovery entirely to algorithms, playlists or industry gatekeepers, YouTube is increasingly allowing fans themselves to help decide which creators deserve more exposure.

And for emerging musicians, that could become particularly interesting.

What is YouTube Hype?

YouTube originally introduced Hype as a way for viewers to support smaller creators.

Videos uploaded within the previous seven days by eligible creators with fewer than 500,000 subscribers can receive Hypes from viewers.

The more Hype a video receives, the more points it earns towards YouTube’s weekly Hype leaderboard, potentially exposing the creator to a much larger audience.

YouTube also gives smaller channels a bonus multiplier, designed to prevent creators with hundreds of thousands of subscribers from automatically dominating the rankings.

Until now, viewers have generally been able to Hype videos a limited number of times each week.

YouTube is now expanding the concept with “Hype with Jewels”.

Fans will be able to purchase Jewels, YouTube’s virtual currency, and use them to give additional Hype to videos they want to support. Fans who participate can also have their handles permanently displayed in the description of the video.

That turns Hype from a simple engagement button into something closer to fan-funded promotion.

YouTube users have already Hyped videos more than one billion times

Hype is no longer a tiny experiment.

According to YouTube figures reported alongside the latest update, viewers have already used Hype more than one billion times across more than 75 million unique videos.

That suggests people are willing to do more than simply like, comment on or share content they enjoy.

They actively want to help creators succeed.

YouTube discovered something similar while originally developing Hype.

Research involving more than 2,500 viewers in the US, Japan and Germany found that over 75% of respondents said they wanted to help smaller and medium-sized creators grow. Among Gen Z respondents, that figure was above 80%.

That behaviour could have interesting consequences for music.

Music fans could become promoters

Imagine an independent artist releasing a new music video.

Traditionally, the artist might promote the release through social media, advertising, playlists, influencers, blogs or their existing mailing list.

On YouTube, their fans could now become another promotional channel.

Instead of simply watching the video, fans could actively Hype it.

Enough Hype could potentially push the video onto YouTube’s Hype leaderboard and expose it to people who have never heard of the artist before.

In other words, the audience doesn’t just consume the release.

The audience helps distribute it.

This could effectively turn highly engaged music fans into a decentralised promotional team.

500 passionate fans could be more powerful than 50,000 passive followers

One of the more interesting changes happening across social media is that follower counts increasingly tell us less about the strength of a fanbase.

An artist might have 200,000 followers but receive relatively little engagement.

Another artist might have only 10,000 followers but have several hundred people who listen to every release, buy merchandise, attend concerts and tell their friends about them.

YouTube Hype potentially increases the value of that second type of audience.

A relatively small number of highly motivated fans could actively help an artist gain visibility.

That could create a new dynamic where artists focus less on accumulating enormous numbers of passive followers and more on developing smaller but much more committed communities.

For independent musicians in particular, that could be valuable.

Hype adds a human layer to music discovery

Most modern music discovery is algorithmic.

Spotify recommends songs based on listening behaviour.

TikTok’s For You feed learns what videos users engage with.

YouTube itself operates one of the world’s most sophisticated recommendation systems.

Hype introduces something slightly different.

Humans are explicitly saying:

“This deserves more attention.”

YouTube has said that Hype itself doesn’t directly affect normal search results or personalised recommendations. Instead, Hype points help eligible videos compete on Hype leaderboards.

But the overall concept is important.

Fans are being given a direct mechanism for helping creators reach new audiences.

For music discovery, that creates another signal alongside streams, views, likes, shares and algorithmic recommendations.

Fandom is becoming part of the product

Hype isn’t happening in isolation.

YouTube’s latest updates include members-only communities where paying channel members can create posts and interact with other fans.

YouTube is also developing more interactive live features, community tools and AI-powered comment moderation. The company described its latest community products as being designed to support some of the world’s biggest fandoms.

This suggests YouTube increasingly views fandom itself as something that can be built into the platform.

YouTube isn’t just somewhere people watch videos.

It wants to be somewhere communities form around creators.

For musicians, those two things are very different.

Watching a music video is a transaction lasting a few minutes.

Joining an artist’s community potentially creates a relationship lasting years.

YouTube could challenge other platforms for the artist-fan relationship

Spotify dominates music streaming, but the core Spotify experience remains centred around listening.

YouTube operates differently.

An artist can publish music videos, Shorts, livestreams, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and community posts.

Fans can comment, subscribe, join memberships and now actively Hype content.

That potentially gives YouTube a much broader relationship with music fans than simply playing songs.

YouTube appears increasingly focused on this wider creator-fan relationship. At its Made on YouTube 2026 event, the company said its new tools are designed to help people discover creators while creating stronger connections between creators and their audiences.

For musicians, that could make YouTube an increasingly important part of building a fanbase rather than simply another destination for uploading music videos.

Could fans eventually influence which artists break?

There is an interesting possibility buried inside all of this.

What happens if fan activity itself becomes a meaningful discovery mechanism?

A small artist releases a new song.

Their first few hundred fans rally around it.

Those fans Hype the video.

The video climbs a leaderboard.

Thousands of new listeners discover it.

Some of those listeners become fans themselves.

That creates more engagement around the next release.

The process repeats.

It starts to resemble a grassroots version of music promotion built directly into the platform.

That doesn’t mean traditional marketing disappears.

Artists will still need great songs, strong branding, consistent content and ways to reach audiences.

But it potentially introduces another route through which emerging musicians can gain attention.

The future of music discovery might be communities, not followers

For years, artists have been told to grow their follower numbers.

The next phase of social media may be less about how many people follow an artist and more about how many people genuinely care.

YouTube Hype is one example of platforms beginning to recognise that difference.

A passive follower might watch a video.

A fan might share it.

A superfan might pay to help other people discover it.

That third group could become increasingly important.

YouTube is essentially experimenting with giving fans a stake in the growth of the creators they support — something the company has said was one of the original ideas behind Hype.

For emerging musicians, that presents an interesting opportunity.

The next breakthrough artist on YouTube might not only be chosen by an algorithm, playlist editor or record label.

They might be pushed there by their fans.

Music discovery has always relied on someone deciding which artists deserve more attention.
