NOVA Could Let Anyone Build Their Own Virtual Instruments With AI

Creating your own virtual instrument has traditionally required a mixture of music production knowledge, software development skills and a considerable amount of time.

Lunacy Audio wants to change that.

The music software company has launched NOVA, a new platform designed around virtual instruments and effects that can work both inside a DAW and directly through a web browser.

But the most interesting part of NOVA is still to come.

Lunacy plans to introduce tools that will allow musicians and producers to build, customise, remix and share their own virtual instruments — potentially without needing traditional programming knowledge.

What is Lunacy NOVA?

NOVA is a new cloud-based music production platform from Lunacy Audio.

Rather than treating a virtual instrument as a piece of software that you download, install and leave largely unchanged, NOVA is being designed as a more flexible ecosystem.

Producers can access instruments through NOVA and use them inside their DAW through the free NOVA Host plugin, while instruments can also operate through the browser.

Lunacy says the system keeps instruments synchronised between the web and the user’s DAW, reducing some of the usual problems surrounding plugin installations, licence keys and compatibility.

That alone makes NOVA interesting.

However, Lunacy’s longer-term ambition goes much further.

You could soon build your own virtual instruments

Later in 2026, Lunacy plans to launch NOVA Builder.

The idea is to allow musicians to create their own instruments and effects using building blocks and AI-assisted tools rather than requiring them to develop a VST plugin from scratch.

A producer could potentially start with an existing instrument, change how it behaves, add effects or completely redesign it before sharing the resulting instrument with somebody else.

That person could then make further modifications.

In other words, virtual instruments could become something closer to collaborative digital projects rather than finished pieces of software.

Building a music plugin without knowing how to code

This is potentially the biggest change NOVA could introduce.

Developing a professional audio plugin normally requires knowledge of programming languages and audio development frameworks.

That creates a large gap between musicians who have ideas for new instruments and the people capable of actually building them.

AI could reduce that barrier significantly.

Instead of learning software development, a producer might eventually be able to describe the instrument they want, combine different audio components and let AI help construct parts of the system.

It’s similar to what is already happening in website and software development, where AI tools increasingly allow people with limited coding experience to create working products.

NOVA could bring a similar approach to music production.

Virtual instruments could become shareable like websites

Another interesting part of Lunacy’s vision is sharing.

Music producers currently collaborate using project files, stems, samples and plugin presets.

This can quickly become complicated.

One producer might send another an Ableton Live or Logic Pro project only to discover that the recipient doesn’t own several of the plugins used in the session.

NOVA is designed around a different model.

Lunacy wants creators to eventually be able to share instruments through a simple link.

Someone could create an unusual synthesizer, share it with another producer and allow them to immediately explore or modify it.

Lunacy co-founder and CEO Casey Kolb has described the system as one where tools don’t necessarily have to remain fixed after they are created.

NOVA already includes free virtual instruments

Although NOVA Builder is still coming, the platform has already launched with a collection of instruments.

Several are available for free.

Free NOVA instruments at launch include:

Zephyr Strings

Good Vibes

Woodland Piano

Silhouettes

Chiptuner

The instruments cover everything from sampled strings and vibraphones to experimental synthesizers and chip-style sounds.

Other NOVA instruments include Swarm, Anima, Drift Cassette, Growl and Gleam.

The NOVA Host itself is also free, giving producers a relatively easy way to experiment with the ecosystem before the Builder features arrive.

Could musicians start selling their own plugins?

Potentially, this is where NOVA becomes even more interesting.

If building an instrument becomes dramatically easier, musicians may eventually start creating music software in the same way that producers currently create sample packs, presets and beats.

A producer might create a unique synthesizer for their own music.

If other musicians like it, that instrument could become a product in its own right.

Reports surrounding NOVA’s launch indicate that Lunacy ultimately sees the platform not only as a creation environment but also as a marketplace where creators can distribute or sell their instruments.

That could potentially create an entirely new category of music creator.

Someone wouldn’t necessarily need to become a professional software developer to become an instrument designer.

AI in music doesn’t always have to mean generating songs

NOVA also represents a different direction for AI music technology.

Much of the discussion around AI and music has focused on systems capable of generating complete songs, vocals or instrumentals.

But AI can also be used to build tools for musicians.

Instead of replacing the creative process, AI could help musicians create new ways of making music.

There is a big distinction between asking AI to generate a finished track and using AI to build a synthesizer that a musician then plays themselves.

Platforms such as NOVA could therefore become one of the more interesting applications of generative technology within music production.

A potential App Store for virtual instruments

The most intriguing possibility is what happens if NOVA attracts a large community of creators.

Thousands of musicians could potentially start building highly specialised instruments.

One producer might create an instrument specifically for ambient music.

Another could create a synth designed for Afrobeats bass sounds.

Someone else might build unusual percussion generators, granular instruments or experimental effects that would previously never have justified the development cost of creating a commercial plugin.

Those creations could then be shared and modified by other musicians.

NOVA could therefore begin to resemble an App Store or creator marketplace for music production tools.

The difference is that the people using the instruments could also be the people building them.

The next generation of music production tools could be user-built

The music software market has historically been controlled by relatively small numbers of specialist companies building plugins for millions of musicians.

AI could start changing that relationship.

If platforms such as NOVA make building virtual instruments significantly easier, the number of people capable of designing music software could increase dramatically.

Musicians would no longer simply choose between instruments created by software companies.

They could build their own.

And perhaps even more importantly, they could share those instruments with everyone else.

NOVA Builder has not fully launched yet, so its capabilities will ultimately determine whether that vision becomes reality.

But the direction is fascinating.

The next major virtual instrument might not come from a large plugin developer.

It could be created by a musician sitting in their bedroom with an idea for a sound that doesn’t exist yet.

Creating your own virtual instrument has traditionally required a mixture of music production knowledge, software development skills and a
