DistroKid is one of the biggest music distribution services in the world, but a new lawsuit filed by Universal Music Group has led some artists to ask whether DistroKid is still safe to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The simple answer is that the existence of a lawsuit does not mean legitimate artists using DistroKid are suddenly unsafe or that their music is going to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the case does raise some important questions that artists should understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universal Music Group filed a lawsuit against DistroKid on September 15, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UMG alleges deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement and has accused the distributor of helping large amounts of allegedly problematic AI-generated material reach streaming services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DistroKid will have an opportunity to contest those allegations, and no court has yet determined that DistroKid is liable for UMG’s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than reacting to individual headlines, musicians should look at several practical factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You should understand whether you keep ownership of your recordings and what rights you grant your distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some distributors charge annual subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others charge per release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some offer free distribution in exchange for a share of royalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RouteNote offers both options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RouteNote Free has no upfront distribution charge, with artists retaining 85% of streaming and download revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RouteNote Premium allows artists to retain 100%, with current pricing starting at $10 for a single and a $9.99 annual fee after the first year if the release remains Premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is worth checking with any subscription-based distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DistroKid’s own support documentation says releases may be removed if an artist stops paying their annual subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its optional Leave a Legacy feature can prevent a particular release being removed because of a lapsed subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leave a Legacy currently costs $29 per single or $49 for an album with two or more tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artists should increasingly consider what happens between clicking Upload and their music appearing on Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artists are generally free to move their catalogue between distributors, subject to any agreements they have entered into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving distributor also doesn’t necessarily mean losing all of your streaming history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When transferring music to RouteNote, artists can reuse existing ISRC and UPC information and keep the audio, artwork and metadata identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RouteNote recommends getting the replacement version live first and then allowing approximately three to five business days for track linking before removing the previous version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
