class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened to the royalties?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard Ashcroft lost them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were subsequently credited as songwriters and the publishing royalties went away from Ashcroft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine writing the biggest song of your class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did Jagger and Richards actually write the famous string part?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s another reason the case became so controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sampled recording was an orchestral reinterpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous arrangement wasn&#8217;t simply lifted from the original Rolling Stones single.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet publishing law concerns the underlying composition as well as the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did The Verve steal the song?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSteal\u201d is too simplistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They deliberately used an existing recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They weren&#8217;t pretending the orchestral material magically appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem was rights clearance and the extent of permitted use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s very different from secretly copying another songwriter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changed in 2019?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed to give their claim back to Richard Ashcroft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashcroft announced that he had regained songwriting credit and future royalties from \u201cBitter Sweet Symphony\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 20 years after the song became famous, the dispute effectively ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Was Allen Klein more responsible than the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pointless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song focuses partly on being trapped by money and ordinary existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which became painfully ironic after the copyright dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A song partly about money ended up generating huge amounts of money that its writer couldn&#8217;t collect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the music video famous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashcroft walks down a London street refusing to move around other pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People collide with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
