happiest records of the 1980s.

The subject is considerably darker.

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is about power.

Who wants it.

What people do to obtain it.

And what happens when everybody believes they should be in control.

The song emerged during the Cold War, when the possibility of nuclear conflict sat constantly behind global politics.

Who wrote it?

The song was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and producer Chris Hughes for Tears for Fears.

It appeared on Songs from the Big Chair in 1985.

Remarkably, it was a relatively late addition to the album.

Is it about world leaders?

Yes.

But not only world leaders.

The phrase works because the desire for control exists at every level.

Countries.

Companies.

Families.

Relationships.

People.

Everybody wants some ability to control their environment.

The danger begins when that desire becomes more important than everybody else.

Why does it sound so happy?

That’s the genius of the recording.

Imagine the same lyrics over ominous industrial music.

The message would be obvious.

Instead, Tears for Fears created:

bright guitar
synthesizers
a bouncing rhythm
an enormous chorus

You can happily sing along to a warning about humanity’s obsession with power.

Why does the rhythm feel unusual?

The song uses a distinctive shuffle feel.

That creates the rolling motion underneath the track.

It’s one reason the record still sounds different from generic 1980s synth-pop.

The groove does a huge amount of work.

What was happening politically?

The song arrived during the Cold War.

The United States and Soviet Union possessed enormous nuclear arsenals.

The possibility of global destruction was a mainstream cultural fear.

British pop music from the era frequently absorbed that anxiety.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Two Tribes” is another obvious example.

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” simply disguises its fear more elegantly.

Why did Lorde’s version sound so dark?

Because Lorde removed the disguise.

Her version for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack slows the song down and makes it ominous.

Suddenly the meaning becomes much more obvious.

Same underlying composition.

Completely different emotional framing.

That’s a brilliant demonstration of how production changes interpretation.

Where have I heard the original?

The song has appeared across decades of film and television.

Its uses frequently fall into two categories.

1980s nostalgia.

Or scenes involving power.

The title does a lot of the storytelling for directors.

What genre is it?

New wave.

Synth-pop.

Pop rock.

It sits perfectly in the middle of those categories.

Songs like “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”

Try:

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels

<p really mean?

Power is seductive.

Everybody believes they could use it better.

Politicians.

Governments.

Ordinary people.

And if everybody tries to rule the world simultaneously, somebody inevitably gets hurt.

Tears for Fears simply had the good sense to make the warning incredibly catchy.

It sounds like one of the happiest records of the 1980s.
