The companies say they will also work together on additional AI audio products for artists and songwriters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Universal Music and ElevenLabs AI platform?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upcoming platform will be built and launched by ElevenLabs using licensed music from Universal Music Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fans will be able to use music from participating artists to create things such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remixes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mashups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternative versions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New interpretations of existing tracks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important difference is that the platform is being designed around licensed music and artist participation rather than simply allowing users to imitate any artist they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A launch date has not yet been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform will also operate separately from ElevenLabs&#8217; existing music-generation products, according to The Verge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ElevenLabs is moving deeper into AI music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ElevenLabs originally became known for its highly realistic AI voice technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has since expanded further into audio and music generation, including ElevenMusic and its Music API.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Universal Music deal is particularly significant because ElevenLabs describes it as its first agreement with a major record label covering both licensing and product development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means ElevenLabs is no longer simply building tools capable of generating music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is beginning to build an ecosystem around licensed music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could become a much larger opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI music is becoming about participation rather than replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For much of the AI music debate, the biggest question has been whether AI-generated songs compete with human artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a different model is starting to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens if fans use AI to interact with music they already love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone might take an existing song and turn it into another genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They might create a completely different version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They might combine elements of different licensed songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or they might create something new around the voice, style or music of an artist who has chosen to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changes AI from simply being a music-generation tool into something closer to an interactive music format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remixes could become a new form of fan engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TikTok has already shown how much fans want to interact with music rather than simply listen to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs are sped up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slowed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined with videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turned into memes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Used in trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI could dramatically increase what is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of needing production skills to remix a track, fans could potentially describe what they want and let an AI tool create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could make remixing music accessible to millions more people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For artists, that could create another way for fans to spend time with their music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And potentially another way to generate revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Universal Music has been increasingly active in licensed AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t UMG&#8217;s first move into artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has been building partnerships with AI and technology companies as it pushes for a licensed approach to generative music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMG has previously announced AI-related collaborations involving companies including Udio, Nvidia and Hook, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The direction is becoming clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major music companies increasingly appear willing to embrace AI if artists and rights holders are involved in the economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is very different from the early generative AI model where companies trained systems first and dealt with music-rights questions later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will artists get paid when fans create AI remixes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exactly how artists and songwriters will be compensated has not yet been publicly detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, both UMG and ElevenLabs have emphasised that artists and songwriters should participate in the value created by AI music products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could ultimately become one of the most important parts of the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Streaming created a model where artists earn when people consume music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI could potentially create another layer where rights holders also earn when fans create with their music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That idea is already starting to emerge elsewhere in the music industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The next phase of AI music may look very different<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative AI music isn&#8217;t going away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the business model surrounding it could change dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first phase was largely about generating a song from a prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next phase could be about licensed music, artists opting into new experiences and fans interacting directly with the catalogues they already love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that happens, AI doesn&#8217;t necessarily replace the relationship between artists and fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could create an entirely new layer on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Universal Music and ElevenLabs partnership may be one of the clearest signs yet of where that market is
