Sonos has started rolling out one of its biggest software updates in some time, introducing a new platform called Sonos 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But if you already own Sonos speakers, the important question isn’t what Sonos has decided to call its software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s whether your Sonos system is actually getting better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The good news is that Sonos 27 includes several genuinely useful changes, particularly for people with multiple Sonos products around their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The update introduces a redesigned Sonos app, the ability to use portable speakers as temporary surround speakers, new controls for Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, Android widgets and even the ability to control Sonos through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here\u2019s what Sonos 27 actually means for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos 27 is the new name for the software platform that runs across the Sonos ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rather than following the old app version numbering that customers may have seen in the App Store, Sonos is moving towards a simpler yearly-style naming system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos says the Sonos 27 update is available across its S2-compatible products, although individual features depend on which Sonos hardware you own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonos has introduced a new navigation system built around Home and System tabs, with the aim of making it quicker to find music and control the speakers around your house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rooms can also be organised more conveniently, while Sonos has introduced additional sorting options and a redesigned volume interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This sounds relatively minor, but for existing Sonos owners it could be one of the most important improvements in the entire update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A multi-room speaker system lives or dies by how quickly you can control it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You don’t want to spend 30 seconds navigating an app just to change the music playing in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The best Sonos experience is the one where the technology almost disappears, and Sonos 27 seems to be trying to move the app further in that direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could potentially use your portable speakers around the house or garden during the day, then bring them into the living room when you’re watching a film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos says its positioning technology can detect where the speakers are relative to each other and the soundbar and configure them accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you’re finished watching TV, you can simply pick them up again and use them as portable speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For customers, that’s a really clever idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest problems with building a premium home audio system is that every new use case normally requires buying another piece of hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos is effectively allowing some existing customers to get more value out of speakers they already own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s exactly the sort of software update smart-home products should be receiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos 27 also takes a significant step towards AI-powered audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos 27mcp is launching in Early Access and allows external AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude to connect with Sonos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s based on Model Context Protocol, or MCP, which is designed to allow AI systems to interact with external services and applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In practical terms, this could eventually mean talking to an AI assistant and asking it to control music around your house without needing to manually open the Sonos app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is probably less immediately important than the app improvements or portable surrounds, but it could become a much bigger part of Sonos over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The interesting part is that Sonos isn’t trying to force everyone into one AI ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, it wants customers to be able to connect different AI assistants to their Sonos system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For consumers increasingly using ChatGPT, Claude and other AI platforms every day, that could make Sonos feel much more connected to the wider smart-home ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos isn’t relying entirely on third-party AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later this autumn, the company plans to launch Sonos 27voice, its own AI-powered music assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea is slightly different from traditional voice assistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of having to know exactly what song or artist you want, Sonos wants users to be able to describe what they are looking for more naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You might ask for music for a relaxed dinner, something energetic for the morning or describe a song even if you can’t remember its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos says its assistant is being designed specifically around music, mood and playback control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That could be significantly more useful than simply saying the name of an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If Sonos gets this right, discovering music through your speakers could eventually feel more like talking to someone who understands music rather than issuing commands to a computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos 27 also introduces headphone linking for the new Sonos Ace Ultra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rather than treating the headphones as a completely separate Bluetooth device, Ace Ultra can connect directly into the Sonos system over Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That means users can move audio between speakers and headphones more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, you might be listening to something through your living-room speakers but want to continue privately without disturbing anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several smaller improvements that could actually make a noticeable difference day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On iOS, Sonos has added a new two-finger gesture for changing volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can tap with two fingers and rotate them to adjust the volume of the current room or speaker group without needing to navigate back to the volume controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can also swipe right on music to add something to the current queue and pull down on the Home screen to refresh the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They’re small changes, but they’re exactly the type of improvements that can make an app feel considerably faster to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another welcome change for iPhone users is the ability to rearrange the connected music services shown inside Sonos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you’ve connected Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and other services, you can now choose the order in which they appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can also remove individual items from your Recently Played section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Again, neither feature is revolutionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But they give customers more control over how their Sonos app works, which is probably more valuable than adding flashy features people rarely use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Android users also get an important improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos 27 introduces Android home screen widgets, allowing users to access their Sonos system without opening the full app every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For people constantly pausing music, changing tracks or adjusting what’s playing around their home, faster controls are always welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sonos has gradually been improving the ways customers can control their speakers outside the main app, including lock-screen controls on both iPhone and Android.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Widgets are another step in that direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
