Spatial audio has become a meaningful part of music streaming.

Apple Music in particular has pushed Dolby Atmos heavily.

Artists can distribute compatible Atmos mixes through DistroKid, but there is an additional cost.

DistroKid currently lists Dolby Atmos as a non-recurring Album Extra costing $26.99 per track.

The recording needs to be supplied as a valid Atmos mix.

The distribution fee is arguably the smaller part.

Creating a good Dolby Atmos mix may require:

specialist mixing

studio time

an Atmos engineer

additional mastering

quality control

That means artists shouldn’t create an Atmos version purely because it’s technically possible.

Potentially when:

the artist has a substantial Apple Music audience

the music benefits creatively from spatial mixing

a label is building a premium catalogue

the additional version supports marketing

One track at $26.99 is manageable.

An album containing 12 tracks costs substantially more.

A label converting a back catalogue containing thousands of recordings would face a very different calculation.

Don’t feel pressured.

A brilliant stereo master is still vastly more important than having an average Atmos mix.

Spatial audio should enhance the music rather than becoming another release checkbox.

If the audience and economics make sense, it can be valuable.

Otherwise, spend the money where listeners will notice it more.
