Audacity has received one of the biggest updates in its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Audacity 4.0 officially launched on September 3, 2026, bringing a completely redesigned interface alongside major changes to how users record, edit and organise audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The free and open-source audio editor has been around for more than two decades and remains one of the most popular tools for recording podcasts, editing music, converting audio files and carrying out quick audio production tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Audacity 4 keeps the basic philosophy of the software intact, but the application itself now looks considerably more modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The developers have rebuilt the Audacity interface using the Qt framework, while introducing customisable Workspaces, improved clip editing, new themes and a more flexible approach to recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Audacity finally has a modern interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the most immediately noticeable difference in Audacity 4 is simply how it looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Previous versions of Audacity were incredibly functional, but the interface had changed relatively little over the years. For new users especially, it could sometimes feel like opening a piece of desktop software from another era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Audacity 4 attempts to fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The entire interface has been rebuilt and now uses native high-DPI rendering, which should make the application look sharper on modern laptops and high-resolution monitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The default Modern workspace strips the interface back to the controls most people regularly need, including play, stop, record, looping, splitting, zooming and audio levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This could make Audacity significantly less intimidating for new users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio clips are much easier to edit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest functional changes in Audacity 4 involves clips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clips are now treated much more like individual objects inside a project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can click directly on a clip to select it, Shift-click to select multiple clips and then move, trim or stretch several clips together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clips can also be grouped so they remain together when they are moved, copied, pasted or duplicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This brings Audacity closer to the workflow people may already recognise from modern digital audio workstations and video editors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It should make larger projects considerably easier to organise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving audio around is more flexible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Audacity has also relaxed some of the restrictions around where clips can be placed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Audio clips can now be moved between compatible mono and stereo tracks more freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dragging one clip over another can replace the overlapping section rather than simply preventing the move altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These sound like fairly technical changes, but together they should make Audacity feel much faster when rearranging music, podcasts or other recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trimming and stretching clips is easier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Audacity 4 adds clearer controls for manipulating individual pieces of audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clips now include handles that make common actions much more obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One handle can be used to trim a clip while another can be used to stretch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That should particularly help newer Audacity users who previously had to understand several different tools and commands before carrying out relatively simple edits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-time Audacity users will notice another major difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another significant addition is ASIO support in the official Windows builds of Audacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ASIO is widely used with professional and semi-professional audio interfaces because it can help provide lower-latency recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Official ASIO support therefore makes Audacity more practical for musicians recording microphones, guitars, keyboards and other instruments through dedicated audio interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
