Now the music charts are beginning to decide whether those tracks should actually be allowed to compete with human artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Australia has just made one of the clearest moves yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Australian Recording Industry Association, better known as ARIA, has announced that wholly AI-generated recordings will no longer be eligible for the ARIA Charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rules take effect from the ARIA Chart dated Monday, August 31, 2026, which is published on Friday, August 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Importantly, ARIA isn’t banning every use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Music that uses generative AI as a supporting tool can still qualify. To remain eligible, ARIA says a recording must be “substantially human made” and must not create concerns around streaming or chart manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The distinction could become incredibly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ARIA gives the example of vocals: a track with an AI-generated lead vocal would not qualify, while a human lead vocal supported by AI-generated backing vocals could still be eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At almost exactly the same time, Luminate has announced a new system for identifying AI-generated music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luminate is one of the most important music data companies in the world and provides data used across the industry, including data behind Billboard’s charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its CONNECT platform can now identify and flag AI-generated songs and artists, with visible “AI Generated” labels expected to roll out to customers later in 2026. Luminate says it has already identified thousands of AI-generated items in its database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That doesn’t mean Billboard has suddenly banned AI-generated music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it does mean the infrastructure is starting to exist for chart companies, streaming platforms, labels and other parts of the music industry to distinguish between human and AI-generated releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That could become a very big deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biggest problem with AI music isn’t simply whether AI was used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modern producers already use huge amounts of software, algorithms and automated tools when creating music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The more difficult question is: where does assistance end and creation begin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If an artist writes and performs a song but uses AI to clean the vocals, is it AI music?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If someone writes lyrics but generates the vocals and instrumental using an AI music platform, is that AI music?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under ARIA’s new system, it is much more likely to fall on the AI-generated side of the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These questions are going to become increasingly important as AI music tools improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Streaming services could eventually display AI labels. Charts could introduce their own eligibility standards. Music distributors may need to collect clearer declarations from artists when releases are uploaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And chart companies may have to answer an even bigger question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Should a completely AI-generated artist be able to have the number one song in the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We might not have a universal answer yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
