enters a livestream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means creators could soon see considerably higher view counts across their videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s an important catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More views won&#8217;t necessarily mean more people are actually watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is changing with YouTube views?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, YouTube never publicly specified a universal amount of time someone needed to watch a standard video before it counted as a view, although around 30 seconds was commonly understood to be an important threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new system, things become much simpler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Video starts playing = one view.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same principle will apply when someone enters a livestream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube says the aim is to make view metrics more consistent between the different types of video available across the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube already made a similar change for Shorts in 2025, where starts and replays began counting towards the headline view number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also brings YouTube closer to platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, where video starts are commonly reflected in view counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">YouTube is introducing \u201cEngaged views\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The really important metric for creators may now be something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube will continue measuring people who actually choose to keep watching a video, but this will be reported separately as <strong>Engaged views<\/strong> inside YouTube Analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simple terms, creators will effectively have two numbers to think about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Views:<\/strong> How many times your video started playing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engaged views:<\/strong> How many viewers stayed and continued watching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For creators trying to understand whether their content is actually working, Engaged views could become considerably more useful than the public view counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does this mean creators will earn more money?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube says the new way of displaying views <strong>will not change creator earnings or how monetisation eligibility is calculated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A video suddenly reporting more views therefore doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean it will generate more advertising revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creators still need people to actually watch their content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch time, retention, advertising opportunities and genuine viewer engagement remain far more important than simply getting a video to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pro Creator View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For creators, this change is both good and bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The positive is that YouTube&#8217;s headline numbers will now better represent <strong>reach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your thumbnail and title convince someone to click, that exposure is being recognised immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But creators need to be careful not to become obsessed with the larger numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A million people starting your video and immediately leaving isn&#8217;t necessarily better than 200,000 people watching most of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the difference between <strong>Views and Engaged views could become one of the most interesting creator metrics on YouTube.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of Views as your <strong>top of funnel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It tells you whether YouTube is putting your content in front of people and whether your packaging \u2014 your title, thumbnail and topic \u2014 is getting people through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engaged views tell you what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did they actually want the content they clicked on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then audience retention tells you whether you managed to keep them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gives creators a much clearer funnel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Impression \u2192 View \u2192 Engaged View \u2192 Watch Time \u2192 Subscriber \/ Fan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The headline number might get bigger under YouTube&#8217;s new system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the creators who win will still be the ones who can turn that initial view into genuine
