About Artist
Kim Ji Hyun, born in 1987, embarked on his jazz journey during his military service in 2007. His passion ignited after listening to the compilation album “Blue Note 100,” with Bill Evans and Jim Hall’s “Undercurrent” serving as a catalyst for his deep dive into the world of jazz.
Following his discharge in 2009, Kim attended the Montreux Jazz Festival, where he was profoundly inspired by the solo piano competition and performances of various artists. This experience solidified his resolve to become a jazz pianist.
Despite facing setbacks, including an unsuccessful audition for Seoul Institute of the Arts in 2010, Kim’s determination never wavered. While briefly returning to a non-music-related university, a transformative moment came in 2011 when he witnessed Joe Sample’s performance in New York, reigniting his passion for jazz.
In 2013, Kim successfully enrolled in Seoul Institute of the Arts. He broadened his jazz horizons by participating in the Sacheon International Jazz Workshop in 2013 and 2014. There, he had the privilege of studying under renowned international masters such as Billy Hart, Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress, Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson, Ben Street, Peter Bernstein, Simon Nabatov, and Vardan Ovsepian.
Kim’s musical journey has culminated in several notable releases
- “Several Possibilities” (2019) with his piano trio ‘Kusikia’
- “Goodbye, Seasons” (2020) as part of the duo ‘Hye-in and Ji-hyun’
- His debut solo album “Speech” (2023)
Jazz pianist Ji Hyun Kim is set to deliver a remarkable performance at the 15th Gwangju Biennale on Saturday, October 19, 2024. This unique collaboration with 33apartment highlights Kim’s musical experimentation and maximizes audience interaction in an unprecedented way.
The performance is divided into two captivating parts. The first set showcases Kim’s second full-length album [beyond the proscenium arch], while the second set features an audience-participatory free improvisation titled [Role Reversal].
The second set, [Role Reversal], is a groundbreaking attempt to give the audience control over the ‘public resonance’. Spectators can remove piano keys or strings during the performance, actively participating in the creation and dissolution of music.
“Through this performance, I want to explore new boundaries of music together with the audience,” Kim shared. Don’t miss this extraordinary experience that blends jazz and contemporary art, breaking down the barriers between performer and audience!
