Kwaito is a South African music genre that emerged in the early 1990s, blending house music with African rhythms, hip-hop and township slang. Originating in Johannesburg’s townships during the post-apartheid era, it became a powerful voice for the youth, reflecting their experiences, struggles and aspirations.

Characterized by slowed-down house beats, heavy basslines and rhythmic lyrics in languages like Zulu and Tsotsitaal, Kwaito was pioneered by artists such as Arthur Mafokate, Mandoza and Zola. Their hits dominated South African airwaves, making Kwaito a cultural movement as much as a music genre.
