DistroKid Social Media Pack: Is It Worth It?
DistroKid’s Social Media Pack is designed to help artists monetise uses of their music in user-generated videos.
That sounds appealing.
But it’s worth looking closely at the economics.
What does it cost?
DistroKid currently charges:
$4.95 per single per year
or
$14.95 per album per year
DistroKid then retains 20% of the advertising revenue generated through the feature.
What does it do?
The service helps identify uses of your music in places such as YouTube and TikTok videos and monetise eligible uses.
For tracks that spread through creator ecosystems, that can generate additional revenue artists might otherwise miss.
The important question: will the track earn enough?
Imagine a single generates $2 of relevant UGC revenue during the year.
Paying $4.95 for access to the service obviously doesn’t make much financial sense.
If the song generates $10,000, the conversation is completely different.
Catalogue scale matters again
A $4.95 annual charge sounds tiny.
Across 100 singles:
$495 per year.
Then add the 20% revenue share.
That’s why labels shouldn’t casually enable every optional service across a large catalogue without analysing performance.
Is it worth it?
Potentially, yes.
Especially for music that:
performs well on YouTube
gets used heavily in TikTok videos
is commonly used by creators
But don’t buy optional distribution extras simply because they’re available.
Every additional service should justify itself.
The artist should be asking:
How much incremental money will this make me?
Not:
How many boxes can I tick during upload?
