2027 GRAMMY Eligibility – What Independent Artists Need to Know
Independent artists can submit eligible music for GRAMMY consideration.
But there are deadlines and technical requirements.
For the 69th GRAMMY Awards, CD Baby’s current guidance states that eligible releases must fall between 31 August 2025 and 28 August 2026, while the 2026 Online Entry Period closes 21 August 2026.
That means artists considering submission should act quickly.
Can an independent artist enter?
Yes.
Being unsigned does not prevent a recording from being considered.
The bigger issue is who can submit the entry.
Entries are submitted by eligible Recording Academy members or registered media companies through the formal Online Entry Process.
Distribution matters
Eligible music must satisfy the Recording Academy’s applicable commercial-release requirements.
CD Baby’s current guide specifically highlights recognised streaming/download availability, proper metadata and valid ISRCs among the technical foundation.

Awards are exactly the wrong time to discover contributor metadata is incomplete.
ISRCs
Each recording should have the correct ISRC.
An ISRC identifies the recording and helps industry systems distinguish it correctly.
Do not casually replace existing ISRCs on already released masters.
Don’t leave submission to the deadline
If something is wrong with:
- Metadata
- Release dates
- Membership
- Submission access
- Recording details
you need time to fix it.
The current entry period ends 21 August 2026.
Being entered isn’t being nominated
This distinction matters.
Submission places an eligible recording into the awards process.
A nomination occurs later after voting and review.
An artist should never describe a GRAMMY entry as a GRAMMY nomination.
Even if you don’t enter
The same preparation is useful for every professional release:
- Accurate metadata
- Complete credits
- ISRCs
- Rights documentation
- High-quality audio
- Proper distribution
Awards are an exceptional use case for something every artist should be doing anyway.
