Apple Music’s AutoMix feature is becoming even more impressive with the release of iOS 27.

First introduced with iOS 26, AutoMix uses artificial intelligence to create DJ-style transitions between songs. It analyses each track and uses techniques such as beat matching and time stretching to move smoothly from one song to the next.

With iOS 27, Apple has improved these transitions to make them feel more natural, immersive and energetic.

What is changing with Apple Music AutoMix?

The original version of AutoMix could sometimes rely on similar transition effects between different songs.

In iOS 27, transitions are reportedly more varied and less abrupt. Apple Music can remix portions of a song’s intro or outro, repeat sections where necessary and adjust the timing to help tracks with different tempos flow together more smoothly.

The result should make playlists feel closer to a professionally mixed DJ set rather than a collection of separate tracks.

This could be especially useful when listening to workout playlists, dance music, road-trip soundtracks or music at parties.

AutoMix is coming to more Apple devices

Apple has also confirmed that the improved AutoMix experience will expand beyond the iPhone.

As part of its 2026 software updates, AutoMix will become available through Apple Music on tvOS and HomePod. This will allow listeners to enjoy continuous DJ-style playback through their television or home speaker system.

How to turn on AutoMix in Apple Music

Apple Music subscribers can activate AutoMix on a compatible iPhone by opening:

Settings > Apps > Music > Song Transitions > AutoMix

Users can also select Crossfade or turn song transitions off completely. AutoMix automatically decides which transition works best and may use a simple crossfade or remove silence when a more complex transition would not suit the music.

When will iOS 27 be released?

iOS 27 is currently available through Apple’s public beta programme, with the full update expected to launch later in 2026. Features available during the beta period may still change before the final release.

AutoMix will not appeal to every listener, particularly those who prefer to hear songs and albums exactly as they were originally produced.

For playlists and social listening, however, the improved transitions could make Apple Music feel considerably more dynamic — and bring it one step closer to placing a virtual DJ inside every iPhone.
