Kosi Sia: “Writing inspires me and performing connects me to people”
Kosi Sia is a dynamic Nigerian Afropop and Dancehall artist, producer and audio engineer whose sound fuses modern African rhythms with global melodic sensibilities. With over a decade of technical and creative experience, he brings a refined approach to songwriting and vocal performance.
Q: How do you approach experimenting with new sounds, or genres?
A: I approach experimentation with open curiosity. I’ve worked across Afrobeat, dancehall, pop, and even soundtrack-style music, so I like to study any new genre in detail—its rhythm, structure, and emotional language. Then I blend it with my African identity and modern sound. I believe music should evolve and every new style I explore is an opportunity to create something fresh, unique, and still groovy.
Q: What’s the best lesson you’ve learned from collaborating with other musicians ?
A: I’ve learned that great music happens when you stay open and let everyone bring their strength. Working with Creepzz (UK) pushed me to tighten my sound and think more globally. Problem Child from St. Vincent, now based in the U.S., added Caribbean flavor and showed me the power of international fusion. And Stay Jay from Ghana reminded me that the vibe and authenticity always come first. Each collaboration has expanded my sound and taught me something new.
Q: What’s a piece of gear, or an instrument you can’t live without?
A: My DAW is essential—whether it’s FL Studio, Cubase, or Studio One, that’s where all ideas come to life. But honestly, my voice is also one of my main instruments. It’s the first tool I use to capture melodies, emotions and ideas before anything else. Both my DAW and my voice are the core of my creative process.
Q: How do you know when a song is truly finished?
A: A song is finished when adding one more thing starts taking away instead of enhancing. I test it in different spaces—the car, studio monitors, headphones—and when I feel the same emotion I intended from the start, I know it’s complete. When the message is clear and the vibe is real, I stop tweaking and let the music breathe.
Q: Which part of the music-making process do you enjoy the most—writing, recording, or performing—and why?
A: Recording is my favorite part. Writing inspires me and performing connects me to people, but recording is where everything becomes real. That’s where I shape the feeling, the groove, the personality of the track. It’s the moment where Kosi Sia steps fully into the music and everything else disappears for a while.
