The latest report from BPI reveals <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/independent-music-uk-set-to-grow\/\">the UK&#8217;s independent sector growing for the 6th year in a row<\/a>, alongside 9 years of growth for the whole industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, independent artists and labels made up 29.2% of music consumption in the UK. Independents grew their share of streaming consumption to 28.3%. Globally, independents now earn half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/spotify#:~:text=You%20can%20distribute%20unlimited%20music,listeners%20all%20around%20the%20world.\">Spotify<\/a> payouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"D1xKyhiGTt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/independent-music-reigns-taking-half-of-spotify-payouts\/\">Independent music reigns taking half of Spotify payouts<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Independent music reigns taking half of Spotify payouts&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/independent-music-reigns-taking-half-of-spotify-payouts\/embed\/#?secret=D1xKyhiGTt\" data-secret=\"D1xKyhiGTt\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of independent music has exploded with the availability of digital music services. However, that presence is translating across formats. A whopping 39.1% of vinyl LP sales in the UK last year were of independent records. Whilst impressive, that&#8217;s slightly down from 2022&#8217;s 41.3% share &#8211; thanks to huge independent releases that year from Arctic Monkeys, the 1975, and Wet Leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/are-cds-coming-back\/\">CDs have made a notable return<\/a>, offering a cheaper alternative to collectors and music fans who cherish physical music in a digital age. In the UK, that resurgence is claimed 32.8% by independents &#8211; a very small market share growth of 0.3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surging popularity of independents is being reflected in the charts. The biggest independent single of the year in the UK was the huge hit &#8216;Escapism.&#8217; by <a href=\"https:\/\/tunedex.routenote.com\/artist\/raye\">Raye<\/a> featuring 070 Shake. Over 60 albums released by independent labels made the weekly Top 10 of the Official Albums Chart in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Escapism.\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5mHdCZtVyb4DcJw8799hZp?si=f79b2f0e14b142c1&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital music has given independents the power to reclaim the power back from major labels and give artists more control.
