Independent music is taking over with the majority of GRAMMY nominations from independents and not major labels this year.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over 50% of the GRAMMY nominations for 2024 have gone to independent artists and labels. According to the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), major labels are a minority in nominations this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GRAMMYs have had a troublesome few years. In 2020 it was revealed that people weren’t really watching the GRAMMYs anymore – especially young people<\/a>. Then in 2021, The Weeknd snubbed the award ceremony after it left him out of nominations despite his chart-topping hit Blinding Lights released that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems the GRAMMYs may have sat up and listened. Their focus on independent music represents an awareness of the changing-industry necessary to remain relevant with the younger generations of listeners. For a lot of them, independent music and streaming services are<\/strong> the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President and CEO, Dr. Richard James Burgess MBE said: “A2IM\u00a0offers its heartfelt congratulations to the independent labels, artists, producers, and songwriters nominated for the 2024 GRAMMYs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRepresenting more than half of all nominees, these companies and creators are the pulse of musical innovation, touching audiences globally with their diverse works. We honor them for making the music that shapes our world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 66th GRAMMY awards will take place on February 4th, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It represents a dramatic shift in recent years away from the stranglehold major labels had over the music industry. Music streaming has democratised availability, allowing anyone to get heard around the world. Gone are the days of fighting for radio plays and the signing of a major label for recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
