{"id":96760,"date":"2023-09-21T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=96760"},"modified":"2023-09-21T09:37:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T08:37:33","slug":"soundexchange-paid-10-billion-to-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundexchange-paid-10-billion-to-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"SoundExchange have paid $10 billion to artists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">SoundExchange see another year of growth paying artists and rightsholders.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-soundexchange-how-do-i-collect-extra-royalties-for-my-music\/\">SoundExchange<\/a> revealed that in the last two decades they have paid out $10 billion in royalties. That&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundexchange-hit-7-billion-in-payouts-to-artists\/\">$3 billion in the last 3 years<\/a>. Their latest report shows things aren&#8217;t slowing down for the rights and royalty collection organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Revealing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundexchange.com\/2023\/09\/15\/soundexchange-distributes-269m-in-digital-royalties-to-creators-in-q2-2023\/\">second quarter payouts for 2023<\/a>, SoundExchange showed a 17% increase in royalties distributed compared to Q2 2022, a total of $269 million. This adds up to an impressive first half for 2023, with a total of $497.8 million in royalties paid out to their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SoundExchange collects royalties for the use of audio recordings on platforms like Pandora and SiriusXM, where the music that is streamed isn&#8217;t chosen directly by the listener. They act as a digital equivalent to PROs paying out royalties for music played in public, such as radio plays and live covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SoundExchange have distributed $10 billion in royalties to rightsholders around the world and have supported artists large and small. They&#8217;ve earned the support of Train frontman Pat Monahan, who says they &#8220;stick up for artists and make at least one part of this industry easier to navigate&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it&#8217;s not all plain sailing in the world of digital royalty collection. SoundExchange sued SiriusXM last month, claiming that they owe &#8220;more than $150 million in royalties to artists and copyright owners&#8221;. They claim this is partly down to the artificial inflation of revenue attributed to webcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SiriusXM disputes the suit, stating they had &#8220;always respected the rights of creators and artists&#8221;.
