{"id":96072,"date":"2023-06-12T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=96072"},"modified":"2023-06-12T13:57:01","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T12:57:01","slug":"spotify-sells-soundtrap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-sells-soundtrap\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotify sells DAW Soundtrap back to its founders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">After acquiring cloud-based music and podcast creation tool Soundtrap five years ago, Spotify focuses on other areas.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in Spotify&#8217;s homeland, Sweden in 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundtrap-the-free-in-browser-daw\/\">Soundtrap<\/a> is a web-based recording, editing and mixing tool, that enables easy-to-use, real-time collaboration. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-just-bought-daw-online-studio-soundtrap\/\">The application was acquired by Spotify in 2017 for an estimated $30 million.<\/a> In the following years, Soundtrap saw huge growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/heres-what-spotify-are-doing-to-help-musicians-during-covid-19-and-how-you-can-get-involved\/\">particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic,<\/a> adding new features along the way, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-launch-soundtrap-capture-a-collaborative-mobile-sound-recorder\/\">a mobile sound recorder app.<\/a> Later, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/roblox-kpop-spotify-island\/\">Spotify implemented the software into their Roblox partnership and metaverse experiment.<\/a> Since launch, Soundtrap was thought to be used by more than 10 million people back in January 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Spotify are selling Soundtrap back to its founders, Per Emanuelsson and Bj\u00f6rn Melinder, for an undisclosed amount, to operate as a standalone business again. It seems music creation is no longer a priority for Spotify, as it puts a focus on marketing opportunities for artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-announce-at-stream-on-2023\/\">as was highlighted at this year&#8217;s Stream On event.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Soundtrap was built to provide the best collaboration platform for making music online. Together with Soundtrap\u2019s co-founder, Bj\u00f6rn Melinder, we\u2019ve made the decision to acquire the company from Spotify, returning to an independent operation. Over the last five years, we\u2019ve greatly benefitted from Spotify\u2019s expertise and global reach, enabling us to rapidly scale our service and launch new products.
