This comes after Universal pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tidal-axes-music-streaming-payout-system-direct-artist-payouts\/\">work with TIDAL<\/a> on remuneration alternatives in streaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announcing the artist-centric initiative, the two companies stated they will look to work towards solving at the problem as a whole, with a broad scope that will seek to fix the whole ecosystem, not just sticking on random band-aids. As the two companies acknowledged, there is, however, no quick fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a while now <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-on-deezer-with-sonos-radio\/\">Deezer <\/a>has been exploring different payment models for its artists, and has officially committed to pursuing user-centric <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-streaming-inquiry-uk\/\">payment systems<\/a> in the future \u2013 meaning a user&#8217;s subscription money has a more direct route to the artists they actually listen to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gvqaIVdp1L\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-deezer-pays-artists\/\">How Deezer Pays Artists: Discussing Artist Remuneration and UCPS (Video)<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;How Deezer Pays Artists: Discussing Artist Remuneration and UCPS (Video)&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-deezer-pays-artists\/embed\/#?secret=gvqaIVdp1L\" data-secret=\"gvqaIVdp1L\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Why are streaming payouts so complicated? Streaming means that listeners can discover new music with a couple of clicks, and talented artists can get their tracks uploaded to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/who-are-the-biggest-artists-on-deezer-in-2022\/\">Deezer<\/a> and other platforms through distributors like RouteNote quicker and easier than ever before. But the music royalties system has not kept pace, stuck in the days of physical sales like CDs and vinyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/is-your-deezer-flow-repetitive-fix\/\">Deezer<\/a>, Jeronimo Folgueira, said: &#8220;As a key player in the music industry, we work with all labels to find ways to make the ecosystem fairer and help artists monetise their music better. The<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/major-uk-music-label-executives-challenged-on-the-economics-of-music-streaming\/\"> current system <\/a>has clear issues that need to be addressed, such as increasing amounts of non-music tracks uploaded on platforms, poor quality covers with misspelt artists\u2019 names and songs to &#8220;steal&#8221; streams, and people trying to trick the system with the length of tracks. This hurts true artists, makes it harder for new ones to emerge and also damages the fan experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What will the alliance mean in practical terms? The partnership will use data to consider different options for economic models and the potential benefits for artists of all kinds of genres and in different locations globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the listener side, a reimagining of Deezer\u2019s user engagement model is also on the cards. There\u2019ll be a focus on bringing artists and fans closer together, as well as the added bonus of increasing subscribers on Deezer. The data gathered will also inform future development of features on Deezer, such as its <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-see-lyrics-on-deezer-in-different-languages\/\">lyric translation<\/a> tool and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/deezers-new-quizzes\/\">quizzes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Folgueira said: &#8220;We believe in quality and fairness at Deezer and with this initiative together with UMG we will look into how we can improve the model to everyone\u2019s benefit. Music is extremely undervalued today and as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/do-the-economics-of-music-streaming-mean-even-established-musicians-cant-pay-the-rent\/\">artist-centric discussion<\/a> we are keen to find additional ways of increasing monetisation, to the benefit of real artists, the labels and platforms like Deezer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Nash, EVP, Chief Digital Officer at UMG said: &#8220;We\u2019re thrilled to explore how we can evolve streaming for the benefit of the entire ecosystem of artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-does-indie-record-label-mean\/\">labels<\/a>, platforms and fans. Such collaboration is critical to the success of the Artist-Centric initiative.
