Launched in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tidal-ucps\/\">the scheme <\/a>saw 10% of HiFi Plus subscribers\u2019 monthly subscription fees go straight to their most-streamed artist. But the programme, TIDAL says, was just an experiment, one that didn&#8217;t succeed as well as hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst this might seem a blow to advocates of user-centric <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundcloud-fan-powered-royalties-increase-artist-payments\/\">streaming models<\/a> \u2013 wherein royalties go directly to most-played artists instead of a pro-rata model of divvying up a pot of royalties by percentage \u2013 TIDAL was quick to say there would be a \u201chigher impact\u201d replacement for the scheme. A recent deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spinnup-cant-accommodate-all-users\/\">Universal Music <\/a>also offered a clue for future investment into better economic value for artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why has the programme come to an end? Jesse Dorogusker, TIDAL CEO, explained the reasoning and what will replace the scheme in a Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JesseDorogusker\/status\/1630568533913489411?s=20\">thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ TIDAL&#39;s purpose is economic empowerment for artists. So finding new ways for artists to support their craft drives what we are building, in streaming and beyond. In 2021, we started a creative and first-of-its-kind experiment toward this goal: Direct Artist Payouts (DAP).<\/p>&mdash; Jesse Dorogusker (@JesseDorogusker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JesseDorogusker\/status\/1630568531812024321?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since March 2021, $500,000 has been distributed to the 70,000 artists enrolled on the scheme. This came on top of standard royalties. This total, however, was apparently far lower than <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-learn-about-music-history-with-tidal\/\">TIDAL <\/a>had envisioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct Artists Payouts were intended as a way for artists to receive revenue straight from fans. Fans could feel safe in the knowledge that streaming royalties from their subscription fee and advertising revenue were going towards their favourite music artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The money is instead being redirected to <a href=\"https:\/\/tidal.com\/rising\">TIDAL RISING<\/a>, a scheme which debuted in 2015 to give funding, education and promotion to emerging artists. TIDAL will also be increasing funding to the scheme, ten times more than what was being paid out under Direct Artist Payouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tidal.com\/artist-submission\"><strong>TIDAL artists can sign up to TIDAL RISING for consideration here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tidal.com\/artist-submission\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/tidal-rising-emerging-artists-funding.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95203 lazyload\" width=\"678\" height=\"383\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This also coincides with TIDAL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-partners-with-tidal-to-develop-more-artist-and-fan-friendly-streaming-model1\/\">partnering with Universal Music<\/a> with a pledge to build a new economic model for music streaming, with an eye on future \u201cdirect funding\u201d for artists.
