{"id":92476,"date":"2022-09-21T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=92476"},"modified":"2022-11-02T14:43:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T14:43:26","slug":"youtube-use-music-in-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-use-music-in-video\/","title":{"rendered":"YouTube&#8217;s Creator Music lets creators use copyright protected music in videos while keeping revenue"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">YouTube has finally expanded their &#8220;partnership with the music industry,&#8221; letting creators use music on YouTube and keep a portion of licensed music revenue.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Creator Music, creators who use music on <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-do-i-make-money-from-youtube-content-id-or-my-youtube-channel\/\">YouTube<\/a> in their long form videos will be able to easily browse a catalogue full of songs they can buy to use \u2013 or choose a revenue-sharing option so artists benefit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes simplify things for YouTube Partner Programme creators on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/free-youtube-music-distribution-2\/\">YouTube <\/a>in a huge way, and put YouTube ahead of rivals in the music licensing world. Before Creator Music, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/pop-songs-2022\/\">pop music <\/a>had been out of bounds for many YouTube creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NEW: Shorts Ad Revenue, New Paths to YPP, Earlier Fan Funding, Shorts Super Thanks and More!\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ENv6DaJPQv0?start=209&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smaller creators wondering how to use copyrighted music on YouTube, who don&#8217;t have the contacts or budget to license copyright-protected music, are usually stuck with two less-than-ideal options when including music in their videos: <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">royalty-free music<\/strong> that lets them keep all of the revenue generated, but use music from unrecognised artists, or <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">copyright-protected music<\/strong> from higher profile artists, but all of the revenue goes to the music rightsholder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creator Music will open up a library of popular music that is bound to rival that of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-add-my-music-to-tiktok-for-free\/\">TikTok<\/a>, YouTube&#8217;s competitor. On top of this, creators will still collect revenue from advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creator Music is in beta and only due to be made available in the US when it launches later this year. <a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-add-your-artist-image-on-youtube-music\/\">YouTube <\/a>says its testing on a smaller group to begin with, and further expansion will come in 2023. It plans on \u201coffering a wide range of licensing price points and usage options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closer to the launch of Creator Music, at <a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\">RouteNote <\/a>we\u2019ll be working with artists to ensure they are paid fairly for their music on monetised videos \u2013 so watch this space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>How to use tracks from Creator Music in your YouTube content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"568\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/how-to-use-copyrighted-music-on-youtube-legally-1.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of YouTube Creator Music.\" class=\"wp-image-93023 lazyload\"\/><figcaption><em>Screenshot of YouTube Creator Music, where creators can use copyrighted music in YouTube<\/em> <em>videos<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>YPP creators can find Creator Music in <strong>YouTube Studio<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There you can search for tracks, preview them, and download them to use in videos. Songs will have two different usage options for monetisation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can choose to <strong>buy a license upfront<\/strong>, which means paying a fee so you can then use the music. You\u2019ll also earn the same from ad revenue as you would if you hadn\u2019t put any music over your video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second option is <strong>revenue share<\/strong>, which lets creators share a fixed portion of advertising revenue with the artist and rightsholders connected to the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s no usage option available, and you still pick the track to use in your video, you might end up with a copyright takedown or <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-content-id-music-distribution\/\">Content ID claim<\/a> on your video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"452\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/how-to-use-copyrighted-music-on-youtube-legally-2.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of YouTube Creator Music.\" class=\"wp-image-93024 lazyload\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Creator Music news comes at the same time as YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-are-monetizing-shorts\/\">announcing <\/a>Shorts monetisation expansions and lowering the threshold for joining the YouTube Partner Programme, and expanding it to include Shorts creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"b2FqT1UPsp\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-are-monetizing-shorts\/\">YouTube are monetizing Shorts and lowering the YPP threshold for Shorts creators<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;YouTube are monetizing Shorts and lowering the YPP threshold for Shorts creators&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-are-monetizing-shorts\/embed\/#?secret=b2FqT1UPsp\" data-secret=\"b2FqT1UPsp\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Creator Music is a way for YouTube to square up to TikTok, offering more tempting monetisation options for creators. It also challenges TikTok by giving creators a music library to rival TikTok&#8217;s The changes were first mentioned in July 2022, when <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/thread\/18138167?hl=en\">Google&#8217;s updated &#8220;YouTube test features and experiments&#8221; support article<\/a> and video hinted that the video platform are to implement a similar system in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch announcement, made in YouTube&#8217;s Made on YouTube event,<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-revenue-sharing\/\"> is a few months after Meta announced Music Revenue Sharing on Facebook<\/a>. Facebook&#8217;s Music Revenue Sharing hopes to strike a balance, allowing creators to use copyrighted music while keeping 20% of the revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with Facebook&#8217;s Music Revenue Sharing, Creator Music could be seen as controversial from the artist&#8217;s point of view, with essentially less revenue going to the artist, but I think it makes sense given the direction of the music streaming industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s as long as artists have control of which tracks are included and know exactly how much percentage they are giving up in exchange for the increased exposure. It&#8217;s also worth noting that creators&#8217; content must also hit certain standards on Facebook&#8217;s Music Revenue Sharing, including that the audio must not be the primary purpose of the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These moves from YouTube and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-upload-music-to-instagram\/\">Facebook <\/a>will undoubtedly be noticed by other video platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/using-tiktok-for-marketing\/\">TikTok<\/a>, and will surely shake up the sync industry, forcing companies to adapt in order to stay relevant against some of the biggest players in tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No word on the catalogue size, or the percentage split yet, as YouTube continue to build and test the Creator Music feature.
