In fact, it pre-defines audio definition.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent artists utilize digital audio recording technology in their home studios daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore understanding bit depth and audio resolution will level up your game in your home recording setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio resolution is an important aspect of any audio product. But we group bits together into groups to form <strong>bytes<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grouped, the digital bits contain enough information to store processing instructions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"bit-depth\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>In our case, the digital bits store information about the amplitude values of sound waves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>What does bit depth mean<\/strong>?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In audio, bit depth determines the number of bits available for us to measure and map sound wave amplitude values. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soundwaves&nbsp;have a&nbsp;countless number&nbsp;of&nbsp;possible amplitude values because they are continuous waves, we need to&nbsp;establish their amplitude values&nbsp;as digital bits to&nbsp;reproduce them accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, we can&#8217;t accurately reproduce our sound wave accurately without enough bits. This is because we don't have enough bits to reconstruct the smooth soundwave.\n\nThough we have more bits in the second example, the soundwave is still pretty blocky and inaccurate. \n\nHowever, in the third and final example we have reconstructed a smooth sound wave due to having enough bits to do so\" class=\"wp-image-92559\"\/><figcaption>Bit depth + sample rate = audio bandwidth<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we can see how bit depth works with the sample rate to reconstruct <strong>one wave cycle<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first two examples, we don&#8217;t have enough bits available to reproduce the continuous sound wave smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"amplitude values\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the third example, we have enough available bits to map the amplitude values of the signal with no error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>But what even are amplitude values?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Amplitude is a measure of signal strength. To reproduce our sound wave digitally, we must take snapshot samples of those wave cycles so our system can reproduce them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Sample rate vs bit depth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bit depth and sample rate give us a total <strong>bandwidth<\/strong> that allows us to record audio digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they are distinctly different, you can&#8217;t have digital audio without one or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sample rate determines how many samples we take <strong>per second<\/strong> of audio. This is the first phase of the ADC process, while bit depth concerns the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bit depth details how many bits to store those samples. Anything lower will give you &#8216;low audio resolution&#8217;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;popular bit depths&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>16-bit<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>24-bit<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>32-bit<\/strong>. Bear in mind, though, that these phrases are binary terms. They represent&nbsp;the&nbsp;number&nbsp;of&nbsp;available bits to measure and store amplitude values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>16-bit =&nbsp;<strong>65,536&nbsp;amplitude values<\/strong> (per second)<\/li><li>24-bit:<strong>&nbsp;=&nbsp;16,777,216&nbsp;amplitude values<\/strong> (per second)<\/li><li>32-bit = &nbsp;<strong>4,294,967,296&nbsp;amplitude values<\/strong> (per second)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a general sense, &#8220;low-resolution audio&#8221; tends to be under 16-bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the surge in popularity of 8-bit music does show you that not everyone cares about high-resolution audio. More to the point, it also shows that creativity has no limits!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"high-res-audio\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, having enough bits to measure and store every amplitude and frequency value of your signal, and preserving all of that information in the audio file, is considered <strong>high audio resolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>What is high res audio<\/strong>?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially, &#8220;high-resolution audio&#8221; is recognized as 24-bit audio with a 96kHz sampling rate (<strong>96,000 snapshot samples per second<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there isn&#8217;t a singular universal standard that defines hi-res audio. However, recording at 24-bit \/ 96kHz will sound pretty clean and will preserve the dynamics of the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s why high res audio can mean different things for different audio files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The Recording Academy, together with record labels,&nbsp;formally defined high-resolution audio&nbsp;as \u201clossless audio that is capable of reproducing the full range of sound from recordings that have been mastered from better than CD quality music sources&#8221;.<\/p><cite><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\" class=\"underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whathifi.com\/advice\/high-resolution-audio-everything-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What Hi-fi<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"dynamic-range\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>In this quote, &#8220;lossless audio&#8221; refers to lossless <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\" class=\"underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/audio-file-formats-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital audio file types<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Lossless files, such as FLAC files, don&#8217;t cut any audio information away once we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\" class=\"underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-bounce-in-music-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">export our project<\/a><\/strong><\/span> like lossy file types do (mp3 files).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>What is dynamic range?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic range refers to the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a signal, measured in dB (decibels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if your <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\" class=\"underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/best-audio-interfaces-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">audio interface<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has 100 dB of dynamic range, it can register signal strengths between&nbsp;0 &#8211; 100 dB. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, a greater dynamic range allows for a bigger contrast between loud and quiet sounds in your recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/What-is-dynamic-range-RouteNote-Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest amplitudes you can record. A higher bit depth offers a higher dynamic range.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And we can use bit depth to calculate the dynamic range of a digital recording like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Maximum dynamic range in decibels = number of bits x 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>8 x 6 = 48dB of dynamic range<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 less than the dynamic range of analog tape recorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>16 x 6 = 96dB of dynamic range&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 ample room for recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>24 x 6 = 144 dB of dynamic range &#8211;<\/strong> high resolution dynamic range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But is such a high dynamic range worth it? Ultimately, this comes down to your music. It&#8217;s more subjective than you may think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your performance has little details that aren&#8217;t immediately noticeable but add value to the listening experience, then yes &#8211; high-resolution audio is worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But high res audio isn&#8217;t worth it if you&#8217;re just starting out and your music is pretty basic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you increase dynamic range with higher bit depths, you are inevitably increasing the size of your recording. As a result, your computer will need to process more bits as you record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"SNR\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>And if your computer isn&#8217;t up to that task then stick to the <strong>standard 16-bit \/ 44.1 kHz<\/strong> audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Signal to noise ratio&#8230; what does that mean?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is the difference in level between the maximum input your gear can handle before noise creeps into the signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measured in dB, the signal-to-noise ratio tells us how loud we can push our input before we begin to notice the noise floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All electronics produce noise. The higher the SNR, the louder we can record before noise creeps into our signal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So if your interface has an SNR of 100dB, this means that you can record at a level up to 100dB before noise infiltrates your signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SNR can be a negative number, a positive one, or even zero, but the higher SNR is the better the signal quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like dynamic range, we can increase the signal-to-noise ratio and lower the noise floor with a higher bit depth. In other words, it defines how much louder you <em>could<\/em> record before distortion (clipping) begins to ruin your signal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine driving a 4-meter high bus through a 5-meter high tunnel. That free 1-meter is headroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In digital audio, the ceiling of that tunnel is 0 dBFS.
