{"id":90200,"date":"2022-01-18T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=90200"},"modified":"2022-01-18T16:56:37","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T16:56:37","slug":"youtube-music-in-south-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtube-music-in-south-korea\/","title":{"rendered":"YouTube Music becomes one of the most popular streaming services in South Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">New data suggests YouTube Music&#8217;s fast growth challenges established music streaming services in the country such as Flo, Vibe and Genie.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube played a huge role in introducing the wider world to K-pop, <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/gangnam-style-breaks-youtube\/\">shooting Gangnam Style to the top of the most-viewed list ten years ago,<\/a> more recently with bands <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/butter-by-bts-breaks-youtube-and-spotify-day-one-streaming-records\/\">BTS<\/a> and <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/blackpink-are-now-the-number-1-artist-on-youtube\/\">Blackpink<\/a> both breaking records on the video sharing platform last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/where-has-google-play-music-gone\/\">Since the death of Google Play Music,<\/a> <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/streaming-services-subscribers-2021\">YouTube Music has seen tremendous growth around the world.<\/a> Reports suggest YouTube Music had around 630,000 subscribers at the start of 2021, then around 1.26 million subscribers by the start of December last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/art\/2022\/01\/732_322406.html\">According to The Korea Times,<\/a> new data from research firm Mobile Index shows <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">YouTube Music<\/strong> has grown from a 1.7% share of the South Korean music streaming market in 2019, to 19.22% by the end of 2021. The report suggests YouTube Music have overtaken services like <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Flo<\/strong> with a 13.31% market share and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Vibe<\/strong> with 4.08%, putting them roughly in line with the second biggest service in the country, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Genie<\/strong> with a 19.24% share. The biggest DSP in South Korea, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Melon<\/strong> are still ahead with 37.28%, however they have lost ground, falling from nearly 50% in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Korea were the sixth largest recorded music market in 2020 according to the IFPI, ranking seventh for streaming, with streaming revenue growing 29.2% in 2020, to $420.6 million.
