What can we learn from the music marketing strategies of these popular female pop artists?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Music data analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viberate.com\/\">Viberate<\/a> have crunched the numbers and revealed just how quickly Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s debut album <em>Sour <\/em>grew on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-release-music-on-spotify\/\">Spotify <\/a>in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodrigo came out in front of two popular female pop artists who have been in the game much longer than the young singer. In the first two weeks of streams <em>Sour <\/em>outperformed Taylor Swift&#8217;s <em>Red (Taylor&#8217;s Version), <\/em>and <em>30 <\/em>by Adele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>So, what&#8217;s the secret sauce for marketing an album?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>2021 was the year that Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s music took off. In a big way this was thanks to her popularity on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-the-tiktok-algorithm-works\/\">TikTok<\/a>. Whilst viral fame <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-make-your-song-go-viral-on-tiktok\/\">shouldn\u2019t be endgame<\/a> for musicians, TikTok\u2019s huge userbase means having a presence on the social media platform could be a winning tactic for artists \u2013 and it&#8217;s free promotion, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodrigo&#8217;s emotional single \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/olivia-rodrigos-debut-single-drivers-license-breaks-streaming-records\/\">drivers license<\/a>\u201d came out of nowhere on TikTok and captured the hearts of teenagers (and teenagers-at-heart). She strategised by quickly following the single with her debut album, the captivating <em>Sour<\/em>, which again slipped perfectly into social media trends with its <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-most-popular-music-genre-in-the-world\/\">90s references<\/a>. Upon the album release, \u201cdrivers license\u201d was raking in <strong>800 million <\/strong>streams every day. It\u2019s now reached <strong>1.2 billion<\/strong> total streams. Not bad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But of course, Rodrigo wasn\u2019t the only female pop artist achieving great new heights in 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/will-mtv-europe-awards-2021-votes-match-up-to-data-of-the-most-popular-music-today\/\">Viberate <\/a>looked at the streaming performances of Adele and Taylor Swift as a comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1524\" height=\"1264\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/olivia-rodrigo-album-release-music-marketing-strategies-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90117 lazyload\"\/><figcaption><em>Image Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/viberate.com\/\">Viberate<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All three artists had an incredible year. Taylor Swift, one of Rodrigo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/olivia-rodrigo-adds-taylor-swift-st-vincent-jack-antonoff-co-writes-to-deja-vu-1193659\/\">most prominent musical influences<\/a>, released two albums in 2021 \u2013 she came second in comparison to Rodrigo\u2019s debut streaming numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both 2021 releases by Taylor Swift were <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/taylor-swift-breaks-records\/\">re-recordings of previous albums<\/a>, as she finally recorded the tracks as she always intended. Whilst longtime fans like Rodrigo streamed the albums to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/taylor-swift-begins-to-re-release-her-old-songs-spot-the-difference\/\">spot changes to the originals<\/a> and hear bonus tracks, curiosity about the releases turned new listeners, who weren\u2019t interested first time around, into fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/will-mtv-europe-awards-2021-votes-match-up-to-data-of-the-most-popular-music-today\/\">Viberate <\/a>noticed that releasing two albums meant Swift was on the radar for the whole year. Saying this, in those initial two weeks, Swift gained <strong>759k followers<\/strong> and a whopping <strong>11.9 million<\/strong> new monthly listeners. In particular, \u201cAll Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor\u2019s Version),\u201d an extended version of her \u2026. song, performed amazingly, generating an average of 50 million streams a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streams of the longer version of \u201cAll Too Well\u201d were boosted by the social media buzz around the track, as rumours of who the song was about unearthed years-old gossip; and also by a 15-minute short film which served as a cinematic music video accompaniment to the extended track. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/is-radio-still-relevant-for-music-artists\/\">Viberate <\/a>noted that out of the three artists, Swift was mentioned on social media the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adele was third in the lineup in terms of streams. 2021 saw the release of her much anticipated sixth album <em>30<\/em>. The lead single \u201cEasy On Me\u201d was released in November and by the end of two weeks had been streamed <strong>385 million<\/strong> times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-top-dj-in-the-world-poll\/\">Viberate <\/a>found that the biggest jump in streams came around the release of the single and announcement of the album \u2013 Adele gained <strong>7.4 million<\/strong> new monthly listeners and <strong>694k<\/strong> <strong>new followers<\/strong> in a fortnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1440\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/olivia-rodrigo-album-release-music-marketing-strategies-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90118 lazyload\"\/><figcaption><em>Image Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/viberate.com\/\">Viberate<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst Rodrigo may lead the trio, both Swift and Adele\u2019s top-performing releases both arrived in the final third of the year, giving the younger singer a head start.
