If Grammys ratings are anything to go by, community-organised awards could be the future.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A creator-led awards celebrating the rap community on TikTok is a great example of what role music awards should play as we <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/year-on-tiktok-2021\/\">head towards 2022<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raptokawards\">#RapTokAwards <\/a>will give unofficial end of year awards to members of the hip hop community on TikTok, as voted for by TikTok users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sorts of DIY movements show the <a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-your-music-on-tiktok-and-earn-money-for-free\/\">TikTok <\/a>community at its chaotic, creative best. #RapTokAwards&#8217; announcement had a wholesome and inclusive feel, encouraging users to recommend their favourite rappers on TikTok and engage with other users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raptokawards\/video\/7037523833561107718?is_from_webapp=1&#038;sender_device=pc&#038;web_id6982521090597750277\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Categories range from &#8220;Best Small RapTok Creator&#8221; and &#8220;Best Producer that\u2019s also a RapTok Creator,&#8221; to &#8220;Best Room on RapTok.&#8221; The awards will be hosted by popular RapTokers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These awards clearly aren\u2019t on the level of major music awards shows, but on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-make-your-song-go-viral-on-tiktok\/\">TikTok <\/a>things move fast. If the ceremony picks up traction, there\u2019s always the chance that the music world outside will take an interest in the nominees who gain the most votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, awards voted for by the general public are prone to bias. See Viberate\u2019s data analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-top-dj-in-the-world-poll\/\">DJ Mag\u2019s Top 100 DJs ranking<\/a>, and of the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/will-mtv-europe-awards-2021-votes-match-up-to-data-of-the-most-popular-music-today\/\">MTV Europe Awards,<\/a> arguing that raw data is a better way of judging popularity than votes. A win can possibly be gained from artists encouraging their fans to pile on with votes that might not reflect their true listening taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s a little different as #RapTokAwards celebrates the musicians as personalities as well as their abilities as hip hop musicians. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-does-tiktok-make-money\/\">TikTok <\/a>is all about the personalized algorithm \u2013 swiping until you like the look or sound of a creator \u2013 so asking for votes based off who you follow on the app is probably a solid way of getting a good idea of the genuine most popular RapTokers on the app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jaydotbell\/video\/7037522902538931461\" data-video-id=\"7037522902538931461\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;\" > <section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@jaydotbell\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jaydotbell?refer=embed\">@jaydotbell<\/a> <p>RAPTOK END OF THE YEAR AWARDS @raptokawards | <a title=\"fyp\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/fyp?refer=embed\">#fyp<\/a> <a title=\"raptok\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/raptok?refer=embed\">#raptok<\/a> <a title=\"musictok\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/musictok?refer=embed\">#musictok<\/a> <a title=\"music\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/music?refer=embed\">#music<\/a> <a title=\"jpegmafia\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/jpegmafia?refer=embed\">#jpegmafia<\/a> <a title=\"peggy\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/peggy?refer=embed\">#peggy<\/a><\/p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c HAZARD DUTY PAY! - Nico Is Lost\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/HAZARD-DUTY-PAY-7031076642432747521?refer=embed\">\u266c HAZARD DUTY PAY! &#8211; Nico Is Lost<\/a> <\/section> <\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Creators are calling it the RapTok GRAMMYs, but the idea of #RapTokAwards is a million miles away from a traditional broadcasted awards show \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-award-shows-are-fighting-to-stay-relevant-in-2020\/\">in a good way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously there aren\u2019t cash prizes or industry clout as from the big music awards, but community-led concepts like this make for a refreshing change from glossy nominee lists with major label shoo-ins and diversity controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar in feel, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-monetize-your-music-on-soundcloud-for-free\/\">SoundCloud\u2019s <\/a>end of year awards <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/most-listened-to-song-on-soundcloud-revealed-in-the-soundcloud-playback-2021\/\">SoundCloud Playback<\/a> were a low-key, scrappy affair, with the winners announced in a no-frills video without any appearances from nominees. More glitzy music awards shows are increasingly feeling like a thing of the past. For one thing, the viewing figures for the GRAMMYs fell 51% from 2020 to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-weeknd-boycotts-grammys-is-time-up-for-the-awards-ceremony\/\">artists are turning away, too<\/a>. Drake has just withdrawn the song \u201cWay 2 Sexy\u201d and his <em>Certified Lover Boy<\/em> album from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2021\/dec\/06\/drake-withdraws-grammy-nominations-2022\">consideration for the 2022 award<\/a>s. No reason was given \u2013 there\u2019s speculation it could have something to do with the bad press around the Astroworld tragedy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drake&#8217;s withdrawal wasn&#8217;t entirely unprecedented owing to his past comments about the GRAMMYs, protesting about being nominated in rap categories despite there being no <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/8-of-the-best-rising-rap-artists-in-2021\/\">rapping <\/a>on the releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For music awards shows to survive in a meaningful way, we need more action like from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/brit-awards-gender-neutral-1261781\/\">BRIT Awards<\/a>, which has removed gendered categories from the awards.
