Transcription is when you listen to a recorded piece of music and notate it down by ear, in the form of sheet music, tablature such as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/top-10-tips-to-teach-yourself-guitar-in-2021\/\">guitar <\/a>tabs, or whatever format you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transcription is a great way to work on your musical ear and get to know your instrument better. It can be a slog, but <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/heres-what-600-year-old-butt-music-from-hell-sounds-like\/\">identifying <\/a>exactly what notes are being played, including the key and rhythm, and writing it all down, means you can easily play the song again later or share it with other musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like so much music theory it gets much quicker with <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-have-a-better-band-practice\/\">practise<\/a>, but we\u2019ve compiled some transcription tips for beginners to start you off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>How to get started transcribing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go easy at first, as even the simplest song will be slow going. Build up your confidence before moving on to complex songs. Try starting with a 12-bar blues like \u201cWithout You\u201d by Fleetwood Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Without You (2013 Remaster)\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hC6_iKw7Qtw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Find out the key first<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first, figure out what key you\u2019re in. Master your scales and chords so you can identify the key, making things a lot easier for yourself as you get going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most songs stay within the scale of whatever key they\u2019re in, bar a few passing blue notes here and there. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/understand-the-music-theory-of-chords-easily\/\">Chords <\/a>can often be identified by the bass note on the first beat of a phrase, which will usually be the root of the chord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scales might not be the sexiest thing in the world, but transcription is a methodical task and practising scales is a good way to learn patience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Slow it way down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the process as slow as you need. Even with the simplest melodies it can be hard to keep up with a recording, so don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re lagging behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sick of constantly hitting the pause button? Use a program to loop sections and slow down the track. This is easy within your DAW, or apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ronimusic.com\/\">Amazing Slow Downer <\/a>let you loop sections quickly with keyboard shortcuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Little by little<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take on the task phrase by phrase. Work out a few notes at a time rather than taking a large 30-second chunk and struggling to cope with the amount of notes. If you\u2019re listening on YouTube, look into using a browser plugin for looping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Software for music transcription<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your instrument, good old fashioned blank manuscript or tab paper, and a pencil is all you need; but there\u2019s also software to make transcribing easier and quicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use a DAW the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-make-midi-piano-sound-more-natural\/\">piano roll <\/a>is a great resource for clicking in notes, and some <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/best-free-daws-available-in-2021\/\">DAWs <\/a>feature built in sheet music editors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Composing Secrets \ud83c\udfb5 How to Transcribe Music (Tips &amp; Tricks)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0_w30cN9alw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For guitar tab, popular sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/ultimateguitar.com\">Ultimate Guitar <\/a>feature a tab editor. Sheet music editing software like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noteflight.com\/\">Noteflight <\/a>are another useful online resource for transcription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Use EQ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Struggling to work out specific notes? Try using a<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/5-top-tips-for-using-eq-in-music-production-2021\/\"> high-pass or low-pass filter <\/a>in your DAW to isolate the sound. This is especially useful for hearing bass notes better. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-compressor-parameters-in-music-production\/\">Compressor plugins<\/a> are also great for bringing out sounds so you don&#8217;t miss any notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get going you&#8217;ll start recognising patterns and sequences, especially when copying down improvised solos.
