A massive global study has revealed the most-listened music genre worldwide. Also \u2013 is 90s a genre?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2021 we take our easy access to a massive range of different types of music for granted. On streaming apps<\/a> you can flick from garage rock to hyperpop in seconds. But, with all the world’s<\/a> music available to us, what is the most popular genre of music?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cEngaging with Music 2021\u201d report<\/a> by record label representatives IFPI <\/a>gathered data from 43,000 people aged 16-64 in 21 countries around the world \u2013 so truly a global study. Here\u2019s what they found out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Arguably, some of the musical types listed aren\u2019t what you\u2019d call traditional genres \u2013  \u201cSoundtracks\u201d<\/strong> for example could range from showtunes from musicals to instrumental movie orchestral scores<\/a>. \u201c90s\u201d<\/strong> meanwhile includes subgenres of 90s grunge rock or Britpop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      90s-inspired music is certainly having a moment in 2021. Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s<\/a> SOUR <\/em>and Beabadoobee\u2019s<\/a> Our Extended Play <\/em>EP both drip with 90s guitar music nostalgia, whilst Lorde has openly acknowledged the obvious influence of Primal Scream\u2019s 1990 track \u201cLoaded\u201d<\/a> on her comeback single \u201cSolar Power.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      IFPI also shared some examples of the most popular genres and where in the world<\/a> their fans live. More than 300 genres were identified, being the favourite music of least one person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s a snapshot of the scope and variety enjoyed around the world, with types of music ranging from K Trot <\/strong>and space disco<\/strong> to hokkien song<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Frances Moore, Chief Executive of the IFPI, said: \u201cIFPI\u2019s Engaging with Music 2021 paints a rich and diverse picture of the growing ways that fans enjoy music around the world… We also see the continued embrace and love of local genres, celebrated within the unique music cultures found in each country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
