What are the rules for correctly formatting your artist name on Apple Music?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you upload your music to Apple Music<\/a> with a music distributor like RouteNote<\/a>, you need to make sure that all the metadata of your release is up to scratch. The wrong information will lead to your release being delayed \u2013 and you\u2019re too excited about getting your music out worldwide to be held up now, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naming an artist incorrectly makes it harder for your content to be found on the streaming service, which will affect your ability to build an audience. With that in mind, here are some boring but necessary guidelines to follow when uploading to Apple Music<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to format artist names on Apple Music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the right way to name an artist on Apple Music? The formatting of your artist name should always be \u201cFirst name \/ Last name\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 for example: \u201cJoe Bloggs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, you don\u2019t have to put in what instruments <\/a>your bandmates play \u2013 you wouldn\u2019t need to write \u201cAdele (Singer)\u201d or \u201cDave Grohl (Drummer)\u201d. Similarly there\u2019s no need to note the band <\/a>name every time you credit a contributor (so \u201cJohn Lennon (Of The Beatles)\u201d would be incorrect).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Names should stay the same throughout all your uploads, written in full, and of course be spelt correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be original and avoid giving a name that describes a generic genre. You can\u2019t name your artist \u201cAcid Jazz\u201d, but \u201cAcid Jazz <\/a>Big Band\u201d would be fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple artists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Compound Artists<\/strong> are another thing to watch out for. You can\u2019t put two artist names in one field, even if they\u2019re equal collaborators <\/a>\u2013 so instead of \u201cElton John & Dua Lipa (Primary)\u201d enter the artists separately as \u201cElton John (Primary)\u201d\/\u201dDual Lipa (Primary)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there\u2019s the case of Reverse Compound Artists<\/strong>, which means artists whose names are listed together within a band <\/a>name. So that\u2019s \u201cHall & Oates\u201d or \u201cCrosby, Stills, Nash & Young\u201d or \u201cSiouxsee and the Banshees\u201d, listed together not as individual Compound Artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
