Plays of the track apparently earned Portishead six times more than what would have been generated <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-streaming-inquiry-uk\/\">under a pro-rata model<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confused? <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/historic-first-as-soundcloud-challenge-music-streaming-payment-system-with-fan-powered-royalties\/\">Fan-powered royalties<\/a> are SoundCloud&#8217;s new royalties system which means that payments go from users to the artists they\u2019ve actually been listening to, as opposed to a big pool that is split according to percentages of plays \u2013 as in the case of the &#8220;pro-rata&#8221; system of the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-add-my-own-music-to-spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in April, SoundCloud rolled out fan-powered royalties to the 100,000 independent artists who monetise directly with SoundCloud. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundclouds-fan-powered-royalties-clarified\/\">We explored the logistics of the new venture here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now SoundCloud says it has proof the system works for artists. The Portishead <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-structure-a-song\/\">song <\/a>in question is a cover of ABBA track \u201cSOS,\u201d and was exclusively released on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-earn-royalties-from-your-existing-music-on-soundcloud-for-free\/\">SoundCloud <\/a>at the beginning of July. The song had previously only existed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-perfect-music-video\/\">music video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SOS by Portishead\" width=\"720\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1073517862&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=720\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/soundcloud-says-portishead-song-earned-500-percent-more-under-new-royalty-plan\/\">Speaking to Pitchfork<\/a>, SoundCloud said: \u201cThe model is tracking as expected and the Portishead stat is a strong confirmation of the model\u2019s design \u2013 fan engagement is driving meaningful revenue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statistics are based on streaming data that stretches under a month, and more details have not been revealed. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-10-biggest-artists-on-soundcloud-in-2021\/\">SoundCloud <\/a>said: \u201cFull aggregation of market-live payout data is pending over the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters say that user-centric <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/top-musicians-want-streaming-pay-revolution\/\">payment models <\/a>like fan-powered royalties will boost revenue for artists below the superstar tier, which the results of &#8220;SOS&#8221; seem to confirm.
