This is Sony\u2019s first venture into <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/indias-online-music-industry-is-set-to-lead-streaming-this-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India\u2019s exploding independent music scene.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of the label is to empower Indian artists many of which are extremely popular but yet to sign to a major due to lopsided contracts on offer. However, details of Day One\u2019s contract and deals are yet to be revealed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/sony-music-acquisition-of-awal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sony Music<\/a> has tried to launch a sub-label called Day One, back in 2011 they launched Day 1 which MD Rajat Kakar has said was \u201cahead of its time\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is exciting to see larger labels being interested in Indian musicians and the overall Indian music scene, it begs the question &#8211; what are they offering? Although major labels can offer large sums of money upfront, the artist tends to have to sign away their licensing rights. Allowing Sony or any other major to own their music.
