{"id":86627,"date":"2021-07-12T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=86627"},"modified":"2021-11-12T15:31:12","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T15:31:12","slug":"midias-q1-2021-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/midias-q1-2021-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Which streaming services have the most subscribers? &#8211; MIDiA&#8217;s Q1 2021 global market share report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Image Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midiaresearch.com\/blog\/global-music-subscriber-market-shares-q1-2021\">MIDiA<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">MIDiA&#8217;s latest global music subscriber market share post reveals the top streaming services, as well as the fastest growing platforms.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.midiaresearch.com\/blog\/global-music-subscriber-market-shares-q1-2021\">Last week, research firm MIDiA published their &#8216;Global music subscriber market shares Q1 2021&#8217; report.<\/a> Unsurprisingly, Spotify still hold the top spot, but services such as Amazon Music, Google (YouTube Music) and Chinese company Tencent (QQ Music, Kugou, Kuwo and WeSing) made huge gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great news for independent artists looking to make an impact online, is that the global music subscriber base is growing faster than ever. In 2020, <strong>100 million<\/strong> new subscribers were added across music streaming services. This brought the total to <strong>467 million<\/strong> subscribers. This is in contrast to 2019, which saw <strong>83 million<\/strong> net new subscribers. Q1 2021 brought in an additional <strong>19.5 million<\/strong> new subscribers, bringing the latest total to <strong>487 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MIDiA states, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-q1-2021-report\/\"><strong>Spotify<\/strong> saw 27 million net subscribers between Q1 2020 and Q1 2021.<\/a> While this number is greater than any other streaming service, Spotify lost two points of market share <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-subscriber-market-share-from-q1-2020-shows-spotify-on-top-followed-by-apple-music-and-amazon-music\/\">over last year,<\/a> as percentage growth trailed competitors. Google&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-your-music-out-on-youtube-music-for-free\/\">YouTube Music<\/a><\/strong> was the fastest-growing music streaming service in 2020, with a huge growth of 60%. Chinese company Tencent&#8217;s music streaming services including <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-tencent\/\"><strong>QQ Music<\/strong>, <strong>Kugou<\/strong>, <strong>Kuwo<\/strong> and <strong>WeSing<\/strong><\/a> collectively come in as the second fastest-growing at 40%, while <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-your-music-on-amazon-music-unlimited-for-free\/\">Amazon Music<\/a><\/strong> saw a steady trajectory up 27%. Apple&#8217;s premium-only streaming service <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-apple-music-for-free-2\/\">Apple Music<\/a><\/strong> grew 12%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube Music&#8217;s 2020 boom shows <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/where-has-google-play-music-gone\/\">as their parent company killed off Google Play Music,<\/a> the newer music streaming service is resonating in many emerging markets and with younger audiences. MIDiA says this shows early signs that YouTube Music may be to Gen Z what Spotify was to Millenials half a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emerging markets are central to music subscriber markets, with Latin America, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World accounting for 60% of all 2020 subscriber growth. China&#8217;s Tencent pulled in 61 million subscribers in Q1 2020, while their top competitor in the country <a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-onto-netease-music-for-free-and-make-money\/\"><strong>NetEase Cloud Music<\/strong><\/a> grew by 18 million subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routenote.com\/\"><strong>RouteNote can help independent artists and labels distribute to all of the stores and streaming services listed above and many others across the world.
