It was announced earlier this year by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) that Fridays would be the new release day for music worldwide and last friday (July 10th for those out of the loop) was the first music release Friday!<\/p>\n
The move has been taken to try and combat piracy in cases where albums are released in some countries before others and also to allow artists to focus their social-media campaigns.<\/p>\n
In a statement the IFPI said they hope it will “re-ignite excitement and a sense of occasion around the release of new music.” They’ve received support from U.S. music retailer representative The Music Business Association as well as streaming sites like Spotify and Rdio.<\/p>\n
The CEO of IFPI, Frances Moore, said in a statement:<\/p>\n
Music fans live in the digital world of today. Their love for new music doesn’t recognize national borders. They want music when it’s available on the Internet – not when it’s ready to be released in their country. An aligned global release day puts an end to the frustration of not being able to access releases in their country when the music available in another country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So how did the first global release day go? Well it will be a while before we see if it has any effect on music consumption but for now here are the top ten selling albums from the first Friday release weekend:<\/p>\n
