{"id":85952,"date":"2021-06-15T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=85952"},"modified":"2021-06-15T11:07:54","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T10:07:54","slug":"independent-labels-market-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/independent-labels-market-share\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent record labels took 26% of the UK market share in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Image credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@ekrull\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eric Krull<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366FF\">Independent record labels saw a market share of 26% during 2020 according to the BPI and Aim.<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>British label bodies the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) and Aim have recently reported that market share taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-a-diy-label-can-help-an-independent-artist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">independent labels<\/a> saw a huge increase during 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-advantages-disadvantages-of-running-a-diy-label\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Independent labels<\/a> share grew to just under 26% last year as measured by \u2018album equivalent sales\u2019, a metric that blends streams and digital\/physical sales.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement also states that independents&#8217; share of \u2018streaming equivalent albums\u2019 has grown in the past five years also.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breaking the stats down into format, independents accounted for 35% of vinyl sales in the UK in 2020, nearly 30% of CD sales, and 24.5% of streaming consumption. All three percentages rising in the first quarter of 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news is fantastic for the grassroots level of the industry that even against all the odds is gaining ground and in some respects thriving. Although major labels dominate the industry, there is more space for independents to grow.
