In March, Download Festival announced that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/uk-festivals-insurance-worries\/\">calling off this summer\u2019s event,<\/a> another <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/boomtown-cancels\/\">musical casualty<\/a> of the ongoing pandemic. The festival\u2019s 4-6 June scheduling meant it would have taken place too early for the next stage of lifting the UK lockdown due on 21 June. But festival-<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/live-nation-sells-170000-tickets-for-2021-uk-summer-festivals-within-three-days\/\">goers<\/a> can now rejoice \u2013 Download is back on, except this year as a trial to monitor the spread of coronavirus at large-scale events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a reduced capacity of 10,000, the one-off Download Pilot could well be the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/trial-festival-covid-research-uk\/\">planned 10,000-capacity trial festival with camping<\/a> which was announced by the UK government last month as part of its Event Research Programme. In a normal year, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/download-festival-2010-lineup\/\">Download Festival <\/a>usually has room for 111,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/DownloadFest\/status\/1400406921153105922\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The significantly reduced capacity allows for revellers to be tested for Covid before entry. Ticket holders will need to take a lateral flow test at home, and take a PCR test beforehand too, but will be refunded if the result is positive. Five days after the festival, another PCR test will need to be returned to complete the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the scientific hoop-jumping means that <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/live-nation-sells-170000-tickets-for-2021-uk-summer-festivals-within-three-days\/\">festival-goers<\/a> can act like any other year at Download \u2013 camping, hugging, and of course moshing, all without wearing masks. The second phase of the government\u2019s research programme comes after the news that the previous pilot events, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-uk-is-to-trial-a-non-socially-distanced-music-festival\/\">including a day festival in Liverpool,<\/a> returned no detectable spread of coronavirus. Only 15 people tested positive for Covid-19 out of 58,000 at the series of pilot events in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Download Pilot will take place at the festival\u2019s usual home of Donnington Bridge from 18-20 June.
